Dr. Art Allen began his teaching career at Howard Payne University in 1988 after 16 years serving as pastor of Baptist churches in Texas and Louisiana. A native of Freeport, Dr. Allen finished his undergraduate work at Howard Payne in 1967 with a major in Religious Education and a minor in History. After receiving a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he earned a Doctor of Theology degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in the areas of Historical Theology and Church History. His dissertation traced the influences and ideas of four major Baptist theologians of the 19th and 20th centuries regarding their views of the person of Jesus Christ.
Dr. Allen was given tenure in the 1990s, was honored as the Outstanding Faculty Member at HPU in 2002, and was named Professor of the Davidson Chair of Christian Studies in 2012. He is a charter member of the Baptist History and Heritage Society. His hobbies include gardening and yard work, visiting children and grandchildren, and supporting Yellow Jacket basketball (Dr. Allen was a member of the HPU varsity basketball team while an undergraduate student).
He and his wife Gayle are parents to two daughters, Myka and Marla, both of whom graduated from Howard Payne University, and they are proud grandparents to four grandchildren. Dr. Allen has and continues to be active in local and area Baptist churches since joining the faculty. During his tenure at Howard Payne, Dr. Allen has served as bi-vocational pastor, interim pastor, pulpit supply preacher and Bible study teacher among other areas of ministry.
Over more than two decades of teaching, Dr. Allen has developed class materials and taught more than twenty different courses in the Christian Studies undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
