Dr. Donnie Auvenshine has been on the faculty of Howard Payne University since 1993. Before coming to Howard Payne, he taught at Hardin-Simmons University from 1986-1993. At Howard Payne University, Dr. Auvenshine has served as dean from 1994-2002 and again beginning in 2007; he has also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2002-2007. He graduated from Howard Payne University with a Bachelor of Arts in Practical Theology (1975) and earned both his Master of Divinity (1980) and Doctor of Philosophy (1987) degrees in Old Testament from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. From 1988-1997, he worked with the archaeologists excavating Banias, Israel (first-century Caesarea-Philippi). Dr. Auvenshine and Dr. Gary Gramling periodically lead students, alumni and friends on tours of Israel.
Serving churches is an important part of Dr. Auvenshine’s life and ministry. He has served as pastor of Baptist churches in De Leon, Odessa and Iraan. During his 27-year university teaching career, he has served churches as interim pastor, pulpit supply, revival evangelist and Bible study teacher.
Dr. Auvenshine and his family live on a 22-acre home site in Early where you can see horses, goats, cats, roadrunners, dove and deer. He and his wife, Sande, have three grown children and seven grandchildren. For fun, he enjoys fishing, reading, playing with the grandkids and trying to help the Texas Rangers win baseball games.
