Dr. Melody Maxwell serves as Assistant Professor of Christian Studies at Howard Payne University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Union University, a master’s degree in divinity from Beeson Divinity School and a doctor of philosophy in Baptist mission history from the International Baptist Theological Seminary. Her research interests include women in Baptist life, the history of Christian missions, and the relationship between religion and culture. Prior to coming to Howard Payne, Dr. Maxwell worked in various capacities at Woman’s Missionary Union, Samford University and East Texas Baptist University. She is a member of the American Society of Missiology, Baptist History and Heritage Society, and National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, and serves on the Heritage and Identity and Mission Commissions of the Baptist World Alliance. In addition to several published articles, Dr. Maxwell has authored two books, The Woman I Am: Southern Baptist Women’s Writings, 1906-2006 (University of Alabama Press, 2014) and Torches in the Corridor: 125 Years of Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union (Tennessee WMU, 2014). Her third book, Doing the Word, co-authored with Laine Scales, is forthcoming from the University of Tennessee Press.

Dr. Maxwell is active in Baptist life and is currently a member of First Baptist Church of Brownwood. She has served in a variety of capacities in local churches, including committee leadership and numerous lay ministry roles. She is available to preach in local churches or to give presentations on topics such as pioneer Christian missionaries, women in the church, and Baptist history.

A native of Tennessee, Dr. Maxwell spent eleven years in Alabama before moving to Texas in 2012. She has traveled to more than forty countries and enjoys introducing students to opportunities for cross-cultural service. Her favorite destinations include national parks and any countries she has not previously visited. In addition to traveling, in her spare time Dr. Maxwell enjoys reading, music, and photography.
