Mission

We take seriously the designation, “The School of Christian Studies.”

We are one of six schools at Howard Payne University. Academically, our “Christian Studies” include biblical, theological, historical and practical ministry studies. We are committed to intellectual growth and the development of the “life of the mind” for our ourselves and for our students. At the same time, “Christian Studies” indicates that we are also committed to the growth and development of the “life of faith.” We value the spiritual and social growth of the faculty and students, just as we do the intellectual growth. We often say, “We want to be good students and good servants of the Lord.”

We serve the entire HPU student community by offering general education courses in Introduction to the Old Testament and Introduction to the New Testament. These courses intend to help students develop or increase their knowledge of the Bible, and to develop or increase their appreciation of the role of the Bible in the Christian life.

Undergraduate Studies

To help students prepare for ministerial or church-related vocations and/or graduate theological education, we offer a Bachelor of Arts degree with the choice of six major fields of study: Bible, Biblical Languages, Christian Education, Cross-Cultural Studies, Practical Theology and Youth Ministry. A minor is also offered in each of these six disciplines. Currently, many of our prospective students are interested in Youth Ministry or Cross-Cultural Studies (missions). For a smaller university, it is rather unique to offer students a full major or minor in Biblical Languages.

Graduate Studies

For graduate studies, we offer the Master of Arts in Youth Ministry or Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry. We began to offer the Master of Arts in Youth Ministry in 2006 to help meet the need for graduate level education for youth ministry professionals. In 2013, we expanded our graduate studies to include the Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry to help meet the need for a more general theological education.

Accelerated Degree Program

The School of Christian Studies also offers accelerated Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts Degrees, by which students have the opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in five years. Students may major in any of the six majors offered for a Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Christian studies (Bible, Biblical Languages, Christian Education, Cross-Cultural Studies, Practical Theology, or Youth Ministry), and may choose either the Master of Arts in Youth Ministry or the Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry.
