I began my career in teaching with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in health, physical education and recreation with a second teaching field in secondary English from Abilene Christian University in 1987. Upon graduation, I began teaching and coaching at the middle and high school levels at Abilene Christian Schools. I taught 6-8 PE, 9-12 Bible and 7-8 English. Also, I coached several middle and high school sports including football, basketball, track and field and baseball. After 4 years, I attended Baylor University where I worked as a Graduate Assistant in recreation and completed a Master of Science in Education in health, physical education and recreation. Upon completion, I taught in the physical education department at York College in York, Nebraska, and served as the head baseball coach. After 4 years, I began teaching at Howard Payne University and continue in my 17th year of teaching for the Department of Exercise and Sports Science.
As a teacher for HPU, I focus primarily on preparing PreK-12 physical education teachers to certify to teach PE in the Texas K-12 school system. During my time at HPU, I have served as the interim chair of the ESS department, Wellness Center director, intramural director, ESS Student Club sponsor, Faculty Assembly president for two terms, and currently function as the public address announcer for several of the HPU athletic teams.
I have many interests outside of my work at HPU. I enjoy traveling with my wife both in the U.S. and abroad, playing with and growing with my grandchildren, working on my small piece of land in the country, building things with wood, singing, and rocking in my chair on the front porch.
