Requirements for major/minors

The department offers a major and 3 minors.  The basic requirements for each are listed below.  Please see the current catalog for the specific information.

Biology major

I.  GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES:

Biology majors usually choose to complete a Bachelor of Science degree, but may choose the Bachelor of Arts degree.

II.  BIOLOGY COURSES: (you must make a “C” or better in all of these courses)

  1. BIO 1459 General Biology (Fall)
  2. BIO 1479 General Animal Biology (Fall, odd and Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in BIO 1459)
  3. BIO 1489 General Plant Biology (Fall, even and Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in BIO 1459)
  4. BIO 2429 Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (Fall; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 1459 and 1479)
  5. BIO 2439 Cell Biology (Spring; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 1459; CHE 2331, 2139, 2341, and 2149 or concurrent enrollment in CHE 2341 and 2149)
  6. BIO 4439 Genetics (Fall; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 1459,  2439; CHE 2331, 2139, 2341, and 2149)
  7. BIO 4109 Research Proposal (Spring; prerequisites – BIO 1459, 1479, and 1489)
  8. BIO 4119 Research (Fall and Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in BIO 4109)
  9. BIO 4211 Senior Thesis and Assessment (Spring; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 4109 and 4119)
  10. Biology elective – 3 or 4 hours of upper-level biology, but not BIO 3114 or 4114.
  11. Ecology, choose 1 of the following 3 courses:
  • BIO 3469 General Ecology (Fall; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 1459 and SCI 2318 or concurrent enrollment in SCI 2318) OR
  • BIO 4459 Biogeography (Spring, odd; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 1459 and 1479) OR
  • BIO 4479 Animal Behavior (Spring, even; prerequisites – “C” or better in BIO 1459 and 1479)

III.  COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS: (you must make a grade of “C” or better)

  1. CIS 1339 Introduction to Computer Information Technology (Fall and Spring)

IV.  STATISTICS: (you must make a grade of “C” or better)

  1.  SCI 2318 Biostatistics (Fall; prerequisites – CIS 1339, MAT 1351)

V.  CHEMISTRY: (you must make a grade of “C” or better in all of these courses)

  1. CHE 1479 General Chemistry I (Fall and Spring; prerequisite – MAT 1351 or concurrent enrollment)
  2. CHE 1489 General Chemistry II (Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in CHE 1479)
  3. CHE 2331 and CHE 2139 Organic Chemistry I and Laboratory (Fall; prerequisite – “C” or better in CHE 1489)
  4. CHE 2341 and CHE 2149 Organic Chemistry II and Laboratory (Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in CHE 2331)

 Life Science – High School Education (Grades 7-12)

This degree is the same as a biology major, except

  1. BIO 3419 Microbiology must be chosen as the upper level elective,
  2. BIO 4000 TExES Review for Secondary Teachers is required,
  3. You must take the Secondary Professional Education courses (see the Department of Education section of the catalog), and
  4. Take certain general education courses which are required by the state of Texas.

Biology minor

18 to 24 credit hours from the following (students may not use the same course for a major and a minor or 2 different minors):

  1. BIO 1459 General Biology (Fall)
  2. BIO 1479 General Animal Biology (Fall, odd and Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in BIO 1459)
  3. BIO 1489 General Plant Biology (Fall, even and Spring; prerequisite – “C” or better in BIO 1459)
  4. 6 to 12 additional hours of biology, not including BIO 1409 Biological Science, BIO 1410 Human Biology, BIO 1419 Life Science for Elementary Education, BIO 2409 Fundamentals of Microbiology, BIO 2489 Human Anatomy and Physiology I, and BIO 2499 Human Anatomy and Physiology II.

Biomedical Sciences minor

18 to 24 credit hours from the following (students may not use the same course for a major and a minor or 2 different minors):

1. At least 10 hours from

  • BIO 3419 Microbiology
  • BIO 4109 Research Proposal
  • BIO 4340 Neurobiology
  • BIO 4419 Advanced Physiology
  • BIO 4372 Immunology
  • SCI 2318 Introductory Biostatistics
  • no more than 3 hours from SCI 2104, 2204, 2304 Science/Medical Internship

2. Up to 8 hours from

  • CHE 4439 Biochemistry I
  • CHE 4449 Biochemistry II
  • PHY 1419 General Physics I
  • PHY 1429 General Physics II
  • PHY 2439 University Physics I
  • PHY 2449 University Physics II

3. Up to 6 hours from

  • PSY 1311 Introduction to Psychology
  • PSY 2351 Statistics for the Social Sciences
  • PSY 3306 Death and Dying
  • PSY 3355 Lifespan Development
  • PSY 4300 Human Sexuality
  • PSY 4302 Health Psychology
  • SOC 1311 Introduction to Sociology
  • SOC 3361 Social Research Theory and Techniques

Health Science Minor

25 credit hours from the following (students may not use the same course for a major and a minor or 2 different minors):

  1. BIO 2489 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
  2. BIO 2499 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
  3. BIO 2371 Nutrition
  4. BIO 2409 Fundamentals of Microbiology
