McNeeley begins newly structured role at HPU

Dr. McNeeley photo reduced for webBROWNWOOD – August 17, 2017 – Howard Payne University’s Dr. Wendy McNeeley recently transitioned to the new role of assistant vice president for university records and dean of general education following the recent merger of the Office of the Registrar and the Office of the Dean of General Education.

In this new role, Dr. McNeeley will incorporate many of the functions of HPU’s Collegium into the university’s records and student advising procedures. The Collegium will continue to serve students as it now does, with a variety of programs to equip students for success through tutoring, academic testing, academic advising, learning assistance, career services and more.

“The registrar’s office touches every student and fits well with advising and academic success,” said Dr. McNeeley. “Both the Collegium and the registrar’s duties are intertwined, so it is a logical fit to bring the offices together.”

In her time at HPU which began in 1995, Dr. McNeeley has taught English and developmental studies courses, served as department chair for developmental studies and has been dean of advising and general education in the university’s Collegium.

“This new structure is a natural fit due to Dr. McNeeley’s exceptional work ethic and her demonstrated love for and dedication to Howard Payne over her 23 years of service,” said Dr. W. Mark Tew, provost and chief academic officer. “Dr. McNeeley loves our students, is respected by her peers and colleagues and understands our work in higher education as a service to Christ and His kingdom.”

Dr. McNeeley said she never thought she would work in higher education or simply education, for that matter.

“Throughout my life, God continuously put people in my path who opened doors and pushed me toward education,” she said. “One should never say ‘never’ to God.”

As part of her new duties, Dr. McNeeley joins the team in the registrar’s office comprised of Martha Fothergill, coordinator of records and reports; Kelly Franke, coordinator of transfer credits and records; and Bobbie Price, certification coordinator and graduation assistant. She will also continue working with personnel in HPU’s Collegium, including Tammy Arreola, career services coordinator; Laura Coulter, assistant professor and academic services coordinator – tutoring and QEP; Celeste Justice, administrative assistant to the dean of advising and general education; Alexa Maddox, academic services coordinator and instructor of developmental studies; Kay Teague, instructor of mathematics; and Shannon Turner, instructor of academic services, learning assistance and academic recovery.

“My confidence in this new structure is due in no small way to the dedication and commitment of those who work in the Collegium and the registrar’s office,” said Dr. Tew.

Dr. McNeeley said she hopes to streamline student advising and records by making things easier for the students, faculty and staff. She looks forward to this new opportunity with great excitement of the possibilities to come.

“I am looking forward to seeing many students succeed during their time at HPU,” she said.

Local employers invited to participate in HPU internship program

HPU InternshipsBROWNWOOD – May 2, 2017 – Howard Payne University’s Office of Career Services has launched an internship program designed to pair local employers with qualified HPU interns across a variety of academic fields.

“Internships are invaluable experiences for our students and beneficial to the employers as well,” said Tammy Arreola, career services coordinator. “HPU interns are highly motivated and eager to put into practice what they’ve learned in the classroom.”

Additionally, said Arreola, interns provide real value to the companies for which they work at little-to-no cost to the employer.

“HPU interns bring fresh ideas and new strengths and skills to the workplace,” said Arreola. “Students from HPU go on to become excellent employees, often at the sites where they have interned.”

HPU invites businesses and organizations to take part in career fair for students and alumni

BROWNWOOD – October 20, 2015 – Howard Payne University will host a career fair for students and alumni on Thursday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Open to the campus only, the fair will introduce current students and graduates to representatives from businesses and organizations around the area.

HPU is seeking businesses interested in participating. There is a $30 registration fee and the deadline to register is Friday, November 6.

HPU launches “A Call to Send” campaign to Heart of Texas residents

ellis_at_campaign_luncheon_for_webBROWNWOOD – April 8, 2013 – Howard Payne University held a luncheon on Monday afternoon to announce its A Call to Send campaign to community leaders from the Heart of Texas area. In preparation for the launch of the campaign, the university unveiled Phase I, which features plans for major new facilities and endowment growth.

A Call to Send is a 10-year, three-phased $65 million campaign that will empower the university to continue to fulfill its mission of providing a quality, Christ-centered education. Phase I is an $18 million campaign with three projects: a new Welcome Center and Academy of Freedom (honors program) building, a new academic building for the School of Education and the Collegium program (advising, tutoring and other services) and increasing the university’s endowment funds for student scholarships and academic program support.

In addition to allowing for the first new buildings on the HPU campus in more than 10 years, the campaign will provide funding to support HPU’s quality academic programs, its state-of-the-art facilities and its scholarships and financial aid to attract and retain students.

Keith Clark of Citizens National Bank welcomed luncheon guests from the Heart of Texas area and introduced Campaign Co-Chairs Dr. Leonard Underwood, retired, of Underwood’s Bar-B-Q, and Dr. Walter C. “Dub” Wilson, business executive, as well as Honorary Chair Dr. O.C. “Putter” Jarvis of Landmark Life Insurance. Clark and Bart Johnson, of Painter & Johnson Financial, serve as the Heart of Texas co-chairs. An invocation was offered by Dr. Dallas Huston, pastor at Center City Baptist Church and sports broadcaster.

Additional Heart of Texas committee members introduced to the community included Dwain Bruner of Bruner Auto Family; Chip Camp of Brownwood Regional Medical Center; Steve Fryar of PF & E Oil Company; Dennis Graham of Airgas; Iva Hamilton, retired from El Paso Natural Gas Company; John Harkey of Ag-Mart; Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes of Haynes Law Firm; Draco Miller of Draco Janitorial and Auto Detailing; Tom Munson of Landmark Life Insurance; J. Fred Perry, retired from PF & E Oil Company; and Robert Porter of Porter Insurance Agency.

Dr. Bill Ellis, HPU president, shared the university’s vision for Phase I of the campaign and the effect it will have on the community.

“The relationship between Howard Payne and Brownwood goes back to the earliest days of the community’s history,” he said. “There are very few universities that are more intimately connected with the communities that surround them than Howard Payne. These projects we are showing you today are going to impact this community in very significant ways.”

“This entire campaign is about attracting students to this university,” he said. “It is about giving them the funds and resources they need to come to this school, so we can send them into the world to make a difference.”

Dr. Leonard Underwood, well known for being a philanthropist in the community and a supporter of the university, spoke about the importance of investing in such a campaign.
“Working closely with the faculty and the students over the years, I’ve learned what a special place this university is,” he said. “It’s a place that has the ability to change the lives of those who pass through here. I’ve discovered the joy of giving to something that’s worthwhile and makes a difference in the lives of so many people.”

The audience was lastly issued a challenge by Dr. Putter Jarvis, described by Clark as a great advocate for Howard Payne, Brownwood and Brown County.

“It’s up to us to see Howard Payne rise to its destiny,” he said. “Will we play our part? We can and we will.”
