HPU Jazz Ensemble to present fall concert this Thursday, October 18

BROWNWOOD – October 16, 2018 – Howard Payne University’s Jazz Ensemble will present its fall concert this Thursday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m. in HPU’s Mims Auditorium. There is no charge for admission and the community is welcome to attend.

Titled “Painting Pictures and Telling Stories,” the concert features a variety of compositions that evoke a mood that suggests a story or painting. Pieces to be performed include “Basie Straight Ahead” by Sammy Nestico; “On Green Dolphin Street” by Bronislau Kaper; “King Porter Stomp” by Jelly Roll Morton; “Cool School Dropout” by Les Hooper; “Swee’ Pea” by Bill Holman; “Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum” by Wayne Shorter; and “Ko-Ko,” “In a Mellow Tone” and “Happy-Go-Lucky Local,” each by Duke Ellington.

Student performers include Brian Blanchard, sophomore from Rockdale; Paige Bowers, senior from Corpus Christi; Jayland Brown, sophomore from Temple; Savannah Burrow, freshman from Temple; Jared Dowling, senior from Grandview; Sarah German, freshman from McGregor; Nathan Lacy, senior from Early; Jessica Manning, freshman from Shepherd; Jose Luis Moreno, junior from Springtown; Dalton Pendergrass, sophomore from Paradise; Chase Pittman, sophomore from Trophy Club; Daniel Rosales, junior from San Saba; Suzanne Schad, junior from Briggs; and Katelyn Zimmer, senior from Brownwood.

Also performing are Frank Nelson, HPU’s director of bands and assistant professor of music, and Rodney Peyton, music minister at San Saba’s First Baptist Church. The Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Stephen Goacher, professor of music.
