HPU observes Mathematics Awareness Month
BROWNWOOD – May 24, 2013 – Howard Payne University’s Department of Mathematics recognized April as Mathematics Awareness Month. The national theme for this year, according to the American Mathematical Society, was Mathematics of Sustainability, “balancing needs and seeking solutions for a complex changing world.”

HPU honor student receives scholarship to study in D.C.
BROWNWOOD – May 22, 2013 – Elizabeth Rogers, a senior political science and European history major in Howard Payne University’s Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom multidisciplinary honors program, was recently chosen to participate in the 2013 Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political & Economic Systems (ICPES) to be held this summer in Washington, D.C.

HPU staffer named Chamber Ambassador of the Month
BROWNWOOD – May 22, 2013 – Karina Daniel, director of corporate, community and foundation relations at Howard Payne University, was named the May 2013 Ambassador of the Month by the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Ambassadors participate in various Chamber and community events and serve as the core volunteer group for the Chamber. The Ambassador of the Month is chosen based on participation in events and programs during the previous month.

TexasBank awards $25,000 to HPU through Doss Foundation
BROWNWOOD – May 15, 2013 – TexasBank recently announced that more than $79,000 in scholarship funds will be given to local and area high schools and colleges – including $25,000 to Howard Payne University – through the Doss Foundation.

HPU El Paso Center celebrates opening of new facility
The Howard Payne University El Paso Center celebrated the opening of its new facility at the First Baptist Church in El Paso on April 29. Dr. Bill Ellis, HPU president, gave a special address to the attendees of the open house and Dr. Stephen Kovach, professor of Christian studies for the El Paso Center, offered a prayer of dedication. As part of the celebration, Blanca Gamez, a 2009 graduate with a double major in Christian studies and business management, shared an inspiring story of how her HPU education from the extension center has made a remarkable difference in the life of her family. A special award was given to Bertha Valle, office manager, for her almost 20 years of dedicated service to the extension center. The award was presented by Dr. Ellis and Dale Meinecke, HPU assistant vice president for external programs and church relations.

HPU assistant baseball coach inducted into Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame
Jerry Don Gleaton, HPU assistant baseball coach, was inducted into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame on May 6.

HPU to hold spring Commencement on May 11
BROWNWOOD – May 7, 2013 – Howard Payne University will graduate approximately 138 undergraduate and graduate students at its spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m., in the Brownwood Coliseum.

HPU students awarded for servant-leadership qualities
BROWNWOOD – May 2, 2013 – Five Howard Payne University students were honored recently for their acts of servant leadership on campus and in the local community. Awards were presented during HPU’s annual Servant Leadership Program.

HPU faculty and staff members honored for service
BROWNWOOD – May 2, 2013 – Members of Howard Payne University’s faculty and staff were recently honored at an annual personnel recognition luncheon held on the HPU campus. Dr. Harlan Scott, chair of the biology department and associate professor of biology, was named Outstanding Faculty Member and Jodi Goode, director of information technology, received the Outstanding Staff Member Award.

BROWNWOOD – April 30, 2013 – Howard Payne University’s Social Work Advisory Board recently presented the Spirit of Social Work award to Chassidy Carroll, a 2008 HPU graduate and co-founder of Hope Home Ministry of Brownwood. Carroll received the award for “many years of outstanding social work service helping others.”

BROWNWOOD – April 30, 2013 – Five graduating seniors in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom honors program at Howard Payne University were recently honored during the annual Sumners Banquet held on the HPU campus.

BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2013 – Howard Payne University’s Department of Theatre will present “Dancing at Lughnasa,” at the HPU Theatre Thursday, April 25, through Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and free for all HPU faculty, staff and students.

BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2013 – The works of Dr. Elisabeth Greene, adjunct faculty member in Howard Payne University’s School of Music and Fine Arts, were recently performed in the Washington, D.C., area.

Cynthia Clawson Courtney honored with prestigious HPU Yellow Rose Award
BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2013 – Dr. Cynthia Clawson Courtney, 1970 Howard Payne University graduate and award-winning vocalist, recently received the 2013 HPU Woman’s Club Yellow Rose Award. The honor was announced at the Yellow Rose Scholarship Luncheon held on the HPU campus.

Ashley Krueger named recipient of HPU’s Yellow Rose Scholarship
BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2013 – Howard Payne University sophomore Ashley Krueger, a music education major from Howe, was named the recipient of the HPU Woman’s Club Yellow Rose Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year. The award was presented at the annual Yellow Rose Scholarship Luncheon held recently on campus.

HPU announces 18th annual “American Music Spectacular”
BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2013 – Howard Payne University’s School of Music and Fine Arts announces the upcoming performance of the university’s Symphonic Band in its 18th annual “American Music Spectacular,” The Struggle for Freedom. The event will be held Thursday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Mims Auditorium.

HPU to host El Paso Center Open House
BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2013 – Howard Payne University will host an Open House at its new El Paso Center location, First Baptist Church El Paso, on Monday, April 29, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The El Paso Chamber of Commerce will perform a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, and guests will have the opportunity to take a tour of the new facilities and enjoy refreshments and fellowship.

BROWNWOOD – April 19, 2013 – Howard Payne University students recently had the opportunity to attend a Dallas lecture by Karl Rove, deputy chief of staff and senior advisor during the George W. Bush administration. The lecture was attended by Academy of Freedom honors students who have received the designation of Sumners Scholars.

BROWNWOOD – April 18, 2013 – The Howard Payne University Jazz Ensemble will present a concert exclusively devoted to the music of the Swing Era on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. The concert will be held in Mims Auditorium on the HPU campus.

HPU to collect donations for West disaster relief
BROWNWOOD – April 18, 2013 – In light of the recent tragedy in West, Texas, Howard Payne University students, faculty and staff are uniting with the surrounding communities to aid in relief efforts. Donations will be collected through Monday morning, April 22, at the university’s Office of Admission (adjacent to the Mabee University Center) before being delivered to West on Monday afternoon.

BROWNWOOD – April 10, 2013 – This Friday, April 12, the familiar children’s fairy tales of “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Pinocchio” will be told through music and drama by students of the Howard Payne University School of Music and Fine Arts. The evening of “OperaTales” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Mims Auditorium. There is no charge for admittance and the doors will open at 7 p.m.

BROWNWOOD – April 9, 2013 – Howard Payne University hosted a Model United Nations (MUN) conference recently, welcoming 40 students from five universities across Texas. In addition to HPU, participants included Baylor University, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University and the University of the Incarnate Word.

BROWNWOOD – April 9, 2013 – Working with a collaborative research group, Dr. W. Mark Tew, Howard Payne University provost, recently coedited and contributed to a volume of “New Directions in Teaching and Learning,” a periodic monograph published by Jossey-Bass, a noted higher education publisher.

BROWNWOOD – April 5, 2013 – Howard Payne University recently announced the launch of an engineering science degree program, designed to prepare students to enter the workforce as engineering assistants or to pursue bachelor’s or master’s degrees in engineering disciplines of their choice. The degree program was approved during a recent meeting of HPU’s Board of Trustees.

HPU students share Christ during Spring Break on South Padre Island
BROWNWOOD – April 4, 2013 – Heading to the beach for Spring Break is a common experience among college students, but a group of Howard Payne University students had perhaps a different purpose in mind when they travelled to South Padre Island last month. Ten students from HPU’s Baptist Student Ministries, along with BSM director Keith Platte, shared the love of Jesus Christ with beachgoers during Beach Reach 2013.

HPU student delegates meet with state legislators
BROWNWOOD – April 4, 2013 – Six students from Howard Payne University visited Austin recently for the Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) Student Advocacy Day. Groups from several private universities in the West Texas region, including HPU, traveled to the capitol building to encourage representatives and senators to continue support for the TEG program.

HPU cheerleaders named National Champions
BROWNWOOD – April 4, 2013 – The Howard Payne University cheerleaders recently participated in the 2013 Christian Cheerleaders of America Cheer Nationals and were named “National Champions” in the small co-ed college division and fourth place overall. The competition consisted of more than 50 divisions, ranging from toddlers to college students, from more than 20 states.

HPU celebrates Black History Month with special chapel service
BROWNWOOD – March 27, 2013 – Howard Payne University celebrated Black History Month with a special chapel service held last month. The second annual service focused on the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation signing and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, in which an estimated 250,000 people demonstrated peacefully in the nation’s capital for civil rights and economic equality. Members of the African-American chapter of HPU’s Alumni Association, alongside current students, presented poetry, music and stories during the service titled “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.”

HPU to host Traffick911 training session
BROWNWOOD – March 25, 2013 – Howard Payne University will host a free Traffick911 training session on the prevention of domestic minor sex trafficking March 28 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held in the Bullion Suites of the Mabee University Center. The training is designed for CPS workers, teachers, school counselors, attorneys, family court personnel, social workers and others who come across at-risk children. Continuing Education Units are available.

BROWNWOOD – March 22, 2013 – Howard Payne University will host Resurrection Week, the university’s annual spring revival, March 25-27. The featured speaker for the week is David Burk, president and founder of Total Surrender Evangelistic Association, Inc., in Arlington. Worship will be led by the Nick Gainey Band. Gainey is a 2008 HPU graduate and the worship pastor and an elder at Connection Community Church in Rowlett.

HPU’s production of “Stealing Home” to open Christian University Theatre Festival
BROWNWOOD – February 28, 2013 – The Howard Payne University Department of Theatre will present its first spring production, “Stealing Home,” in several performances Thursday, Feb. 28, through Monday, March 4. The final performance of the show will open the Christian University Theatre Festival, held March 4-6, in which HPU will host acting companies from Hardin-Simmons University, Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University.

HPU honors 288 students for academic success in fall 2012 semester

BROWNWOOD – December 17, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s Baptist Student Ministry recently completed the fall 2012 semester with the annual “Mustache Wheel of Doom” fundraiser. BROWNWOOD – December 10, 2012 – This Christmas, Howard Payne University is encouraging people from Brownwood and beyond to give themselves the gift of a master’s education from HPU. The university offers four master’s degree programs, with a new semester beginning January 15.

Howard Payne University faculty and staff will have the opportunity to support a worthy cause during the President's Christmas Reception to be held December 8 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monetary donations will be collected to support the Hope Home Ministry, founded by two HPU students.

BROWNWOOD – November 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 19, through Tuesday, Jan. 1, in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays. Offices will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas visits HPU campus
BROWNWOOD – November 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University hosted a presentation by representatives from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas on Thursday. Area businesspeople, high school students and other community members joined HPU faculty, staff and students in learning about the history of the Federal Reserve as well as economic trends and predictions for the future.

BROWNWOOD – November 26, 2012 – There are still opportunities to view the works of David E. Harmon, professor of art and chair of the Department of Art at Howard Payne University. The exhibit will be open through December 5, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the university’s Doakie Day Art Center.

HPU’s Symphonic Band and Concert Choir to present Christmas Celebration
BROWNWOOD – November 20, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s Symphonic Band and Concert Choir will present a Christmas Celebration concert on Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m. in HPU’s Mims Auditorium. There is no charge for admission, but guests are encouraged to bring a canned good or boxed dry good as a donation. All of the items collected will go to Brownwood’s Good Samaritan Ministries to aid those in need this winter and holiday season.

HPU memorializes Colorado victim, announces scholarship at San Antonio Spurs game
BROWNWOOD – November 20, 2012 – Howard Payne University memorialized alumnus Gordon Cowden -- a victim of the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting -- during halftime of the San Antonio Spurs Faith and Family Night game on Saturday, which would have been his 52nd birthday. The university presented a gift to his family and announced the establishment of a $60,000 HPU presidential scholarship in his name.

HPU’s Tau Beta Sigma to host fundraiser Christmas dinner
BROWNWOOD – November 19, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, a national honorary band sorority, will host a Christmas dinner on Tuesday, November 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church of Brownwood. A minimum $5 donation is requested and proceeds will go toward the purchase of new uniforms for the HPU Yellow Jacket Band.

New HPU scholarship to benefit Central Texas students
BROWNWOOD – November 16, 2012 – Howard Payne University is offering a new scholarship to students from Central Texas, which will award $48,000 over four years to eligible applicants. The Central Texas Scholarship Program is offered to students who are graduates of high schools and home schools in the Central Texas area, meet unconditional admission requirements and enroll full-time in the fall and spring semesters.

HPU appoints assistant vice president for finance
BROWNWOOD – November 13, 2012 – Howard Payne University recently appointed Emily (Tittle) Attaway, a 2009 graduate of the university, as assistant vice president for finance. Attaway, a certified public accountant, will direct and oversee HPU’s business office, which is responsible for financial reporting, accounting operations, budget management, student accounts, cashiering, accounts payable and audit compliance.

BROWNWOOD – November 8, 2012 – Howard Payne University presented a check for $3,857.81 to representatives from Brownwood Regional Medical Center’s Walker Cancer Center on Tuesday. The donation represents funds raised during the university’s Brenda Newbury Breast Cancer Awareness Walk-A-Thon held last month.

HPU’s Student Speaker Bureau has busy semester with tournaments at home and abroad
BROWNWOOD – October 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s speech and debate team, Student Speaker Bureau, has a busy month ahead hosting and competing in tournaments. In addition to conducting the Fall 2012 Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association state championship tournament Nov. 2-4 on the HPU campus, the SSB will travel to Oxford, England, to compete in the Oxford IV Inter-Varsity Debate Tournament Nov. 8-10.

HPU to offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
BROWNWOOD – October 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University has announced that it will offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree beginning in the fall 2014 semester, pending accreditation approval. The degree will be offered in response to large demand.

BROWNWOOD – October 29, 2012 – Howard Payne University will host a reception and viewing of paintings by David E. Harmon, professor of art and chair of the Department of Art, at the university’s Doakie Day Art Center on November 1 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will also be a lecture by Harmon from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the art center. BROWNWOOD – October 25, 2012 – Howard Payne University recently held the Brenda Newbury Annual Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, with proceeds going to cancer research. The event is named in honor of Brenda Newbury, wife of HPU chancellor and former president Dr. Don Newbury.

HPU’s Winds of Triumph bring London experiences back to the classroom
BROWNWOOD – October 25, 2012 – Howard Payne University is known for providing unique educational experiences, but quite a few people on campus are still in awe of one such opportunity presented to students this summer. One of the most discussed events of the summer, the 2012 Olympic Games, was held in London and HPU students not only were in attendance – they were on stage.

BROWNWOOD – October 5, 2012 – Howard Payne University has expanded to three campuses across the state, and the university recently created a new administrative position to serve these extension centers. Dale Meinecke, a 1998 HPU graduate, was appointed assistant vice president for external programs and church relations.

BROWNWOOD – October 2, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s Homecoming celebration will be held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 12-14. This year’s theme is “The Great Adventure,” and approximately 40 events will be held throughout the weekend.

Display at HPU memorializes domestic violence victims
BROWNWOOD – October 2, 2012 – In observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Howard Payne University is hosting a special exhibit to pay tribute to the lives lost to domestic violence. The “Empty Shoes” display at the university’s Girling Center for Social Justice features a pair of shoes for each of the 10 Central Texas women and children who have died in the last 13 years as a result of such violence.

Generous grant allows HPU to hit the highways
BROWNWOOD – October 2, 2012 – Howard Payne University is now mobile thanks to a generous grant from the Texas Pioneer Foundation and assistance from the Bruner Auto Group of Brownwood. The new Mobile Go Center, a 42-foot trailer equipped with laptop computers, satellite Internet and more, will allow HPU to take the university to prospective students across the state.

HPU was also named to the “Great Schools at Great Prices” list, in which the publication determines the value of education received by comparing the quality of the programs offered to the cost of attendance.

HPU alumnus Randy Johnson to retire from youth ministry after 38 years
BROWNWOOD – Sept. 6, 2012 – Randy Johnson, youth minister at First Baptist Church of Richardson, does not attribute his longevity with the church to his skills as a minister. In fact, Johnson, who will retire in January after 28 years at FBC Richardson and 38 total years as a youth minister, says just the opposite.

BROWNWOOD – Sept. 4, 2012 – Lauren Teel, a 2010 graduate of Howard Payne University, recently received the Nancy Stallings Lee Endowed Scholarship at Baylor University. Teel, a student at Baylor Law School, who hails from Canton, was the first recipient of this award.

HPU group tours four Spanish cities
BROWNWOOD – Sept. 4, 2012 – Students make many memories throughout their college years, but seeing the Cathedral of Toledo or the paintings of Picasso will likely stand out as some of the best for students in Howard Payne University’s Culture and History of Spain class.

HPU named “Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education
BROWNWOOD – September 4, 2012 – Howard Payne University was recently honored as a “2012 Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education. This year, a record 47,000 employees from universities across the nation participated in The Chronicle’s survey. Of the 294 colleges represented, 103 were named as great places to work, being recognized for specific best practices and policies. HPU was honored in the areas of Work/Life Balance and Supervisor or Department-Chair Relationship.

BROWNWOOD – Aug. 7, 2012 – Though not a student or employee at Howard Payne University, Joel Tucker is widely recognized on campus. His father, Dr. Robert Tucker, serves as the dean of music and fine arts and extended education at HPU, and Joel is on campus often, visiting his father or stopping by Fambrough’s Grill and Eatery for a burger and Coke. Dr. Tucker recently wrote a book inspired by Joel, titled “Like a Crown: Adventures in Autism.”

HPU alumni help heal Iraqi hearts
BROWNWOOD – June 4, 2012 – Monique Ching, an international student from Hong Kong who recently graduated from Howard Payne University, is serving as an intern for Preemptive Love Coalition (PLC) in Iraq. PLC, founded in 2007 by HPU alumni Jeremy and Jessica (Bond) Courtney, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the more than 30,000 children awaiting lifesaving heart surgery.

HPU students honored during Academic Awards Convocation

BROWNWOOD – April 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University recently honored 81 students for academic achievements during the spring 2012 semester. The honors were conferred at the annual Academic Awards Convocation ceremony held on HPU’s campus.

HPU Commencement scheduled for May 5
BROWNWOOD – April 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University will graduate 154 students at its spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m., in the Brownwood Coliseum. Of the graduates, 150 will receive bachelor’s degrees and four will receive Master of Education in Instructional Leadership degrees. The university will also present an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to retired faculty member Dr. Robert L. Smith.

Lillie Davis named recipient of HPU’s Yellow Rose Scholarship
BROWNWOOD – April 23, 2012 – Howard Payne University sophomore Lillie Davis, a cross-cultural studies major from Lampasas, was named the recipient of the HPU Woman’s Club Yellow Rose Scholarship for the 2012-2013 school year. BROWNWOOD – April 23, 2012 – The Howard Payne University cheerleaders recently dominated in a cheer competition hosted by Nationwide Cheer and Dance at St. Edward’s University in Austin. HPU earned the most points and brought home first place overall and the title “Texas Champs” in NCAA Division III.

HPU’s security force to become Department of Public Safety
BROWNWOOD – April 23, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s Board of Trustees recently approved the university’s decision to upgrade its security force to a Department of Public Safety. The DPS agency will include at least one commissioned police officer, and the current security personnel will undergo training to become public safety officers.

HPU plans higher education presence in New Braunfels area
BROWNWOOD – March 30, 2012 – Howard Payne University is taking part in a major development project that will bring an HPU extension center to the Comal/Guadalupe County area. During its regular meeting held on campus earlier this week, the HPU Board of Trustees, upon the recommendation of the Academic and Faculty Services Committee, authorized the university to begin working to develop an HPU presence in the New Braunfels area.

BROWNWOOD – March 29, 2012 – Members of Howard Payne University’s Moot Court team received the highest rankings at a recent tournament at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Jake Aschmutat, a senior from Corpus Christi, and Charity Chambers, a junior from Derby, Kan., were named the Tournament Champions after defeating teams from Texas A&M University and the University of North Texas in the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament.

More than $5,000 raised for HPU’s Winds of Triumph at special event
BROWNWOOD – March 9, 2012 – Howard Payne University’s Java Jazz with Hazel Miller concert was deemed very successful, with the facility reaching near capacity and more than $5,000 raised to help send HPU’s Winds of Triumph musical group to perform at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Most students at Howard Payne University recognize Clay Tyner as the Baptist Student Ministry worship leader, perhaps the lead singer of Christian band One Less Stone or maybe even “that guy with the dreads.” Tyner’s peers may identify him by one of his many endeavors, but he plays another very important role and one that has become particularly close to his heart – a Hope Ambassador to Haiti for the interdenominational ministry Hope for the Hungry.

BROWNWOOD – September 22, 2011 – Jacket Golf has been an entertaining fixture on Howard Payne University’s campus for 20 years, and the university recently took steps to ensure that it will continue well into the future. The game, played with tennis balls and golf clubs, now has an official home on HPU’s campus, complete with a 10-hole course, tee boxes and targets.

HPU’s Zeta Beta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi receives honors
BROWNWOOD – July 15, 2011 – Howard Payne University’s Zeta Beta chapter of the national band fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi was named winner of the D.O. Wiley Outstanding Chapter Award for the 2010-2011 school year.

Dr. James E. McEachern ’62 passed away on July 12

Lady Jackets basketball team honored at Silver Stars game
The HPU Lady Jackets, 2011 American Southwest Conference women’s basketball champions, were recognized prior to the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars game against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 24.

Students complete criminal justice internships
BROWNWOOD – July 1, 2011 – Eleven Howard Payne University students were recently honored for the successful completion of criminal justice internships. The students were recognized at a luncheon held at the Bettie and Robert Girling Center for Social Justice at HPU.

Literature Center at HPU Hosts Distribution Event for Children’s Books
The Heart of Texas Literature Center at Howard Payne University held its 23rd annual distribution day on May 12, at which approximately 3,500 children’s books were dispersed among the center’s sponsor organizations.

On May 10-19, Frank Hawkins, part-time lab assistant for modern languages, and Carla Hawkins, assistant professor of modern languages, traveled with nine HPU students to Quito, Ecuador, for a class on Ecuadorian culture and history.
