Major Students seeking a major in Biology should take 33 to 36 semester hours.

Minor A minor in Biology consists of 18 to 24 semester hours chosen in consultation with the head of the department.

Teacher Certification  Teacher certification in Biology is available.

Beyond the Classroom  A variety of field trips, computer-assisted instruction, internships in area medical facilities and agencies, and frequent seminars contribute to students' professional growth. Special studies courses, often suggested by students, supplement the regular curriculum.

Graduate Programs  HPU's science programs prepare students for successful work at the graduate level. Recent graduates have studied medicine, dentistry, optometry, and pharmacy at Texas Christian University, University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Medical School, and Baylor College of Dentistry.

Facilities  Science and mathematics facilities are located in the Winebrenner Memorial Hall of Science, a two-story building with spacious classrooms, computer labs, herbarium, and greenhouse. Students have access to a variety of science tools and equipment, providing hands-on experience in the laboratory.

Scholarships  Financial aid is available through academic scholarships, research and laboratory assistantships, work study, and loans. Departmental scholarships are available.

Honors Program  Biology majors may choose to apply for admission to the Academy of Freedom multidisciplinary honors program. Providing an innovative approach to the academic program, the Academy enables students to combine their specialized major with coursework grounded in an understanding of the American free enterprise system. Through advanced study in such areas political science, history, psychology, and sociology, students gain a better understanding of their role in today's society. Challenging projects enable students to hone their research and writing skills for further study in graduate school.
