Howard Payne University prepares preservice teachers to meet the professional standards required by the State of Texas. The university has a strong heritage of preparing teachers who serve as Christian role models in both public and accredited private schools.
Degree - Howard Payne University, which is accredited by the State Board for Educator Certification, offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.
Certification - HPU offers elementary (EC-6), middle school (4-8), secondary (8-12) and all-level (EC-12) certification.
Middle School Subjects - Specializations are available in language arts, social studies, math and science.
Secondary Education Subjects - Specializations are available in language arts, social studies, math and science.
All-level Education Subjects - Specializations are available in art, choral music, instrumental music, and physical education , Spanish and theater arts.
Professional Education - The teacher education program at HPU is built upon a foundation of professional education courses. Through this coursework, students learn principles, theories and methods of teaching, curriculum, instructional resources and current trends and issues. Students also work with public school students to enhance their academic preparation.
Technology - The teacher education program maintains a well-equipped technology lab and a smart classroom that includes an interactive whiteboard. Through HPU's Walker Memorial Library, students in the teacher education program have access to one of the most complete public school curriculum collections in Texas.
Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program - The HPU School of Education offers individuals who already have a qualifying college degree the opportunity to pursue teacher certification. Such individuals may pursue certification in any fields offered at HPU. The Certification Officer in the School of Education will develop an individualized deficiency plan which will outline the specific requirements necessary to be completed in order to be certified in the desired field.
Honors Program - Education majors may choose to apply for admission to the Academy of Freedom multidisciplinary honors program. Providing an innovative approach to the academic program, the Academy enables students to combine their specialized major with coursework grounded in an understanding of the American free enterprise system.
Graduates - In addition to a host of teachers and administrators across Texas and beyond, the teacher education program can number among its graduates Mr. James Harris, past chairman of the State Board of Educator Certification; and Dr. J.W. Edgar, the first and longest-serving commissioner of the Texas Education Agency.
