SOCIAL WORK
The Program The Social Work program prepares students for entry- level positions in social work in a variety of social agencies including public, nonprofit, private, Christian based and government. Students upon graduation are also prepared for professional licensure in Texas. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council of Social Work Education. Check out these links to the Council on Social Work Education, CSWE, and the National Association of Social Workers NASW. Click here to read the goals and objectives of the Social Work program.
Major A major in Social Work for the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Arts degree consists of 36 semester hours.
Minor A minor in social work is not offered. However, students must take 18-24 units in a related field such as sociology, criminal justice or psychology. A student may minor in one of these areas following the requirements of that program.
Advanced standing Upon completion of this program many universities will offer graduates advanced standing in their social work graduate. Programs at UT- Arlington and Baylor University offer graduate programs that we recommend to many of our students planning to remain in the Brownwood area.

Beyond the classroom A key component of the social work program is the opportunity to volunteer in local agencies in the community. Seniors are involved in a 450 hour internship program under the supervision of a social worker in the community. Internship opportunities include Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Texas Youth Commission, Juvenile Probation, Child Protective Services, nursing homes and child and family agencies.
Baccalaureate social work graduates have knowledge, skills and a value base that has been augmented by professional social work supervision in social services. Social work's focus on the "person-in-environment" uniquely prepares BSW graduates to work effectively with individuals, families, small groups, communities and organizations.
BSW graduates are employed in many different work settings under public and private auspices that may include:
