|HPU's Department of Modern Languages offers a major in Spanish, consisting of 30-36 semester hours, and, depending on goals and interests, students can plan their individual programs of study with an emphasis on language, literature or teaching.
We also offer minors in Spanish and French, and teacher certification in Spanish.
HPU has an English as a Second Language endorsement for teachers. This program allows certified teachers or college students the opportunity to obtain an endorsement in ESL by taking courses in linguistics and language teaching methodology.
Howard Payne University offers an endorsement in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) through the Department of Modern Languages and the School of Education. This program is open to all students who are planning to obtain, or who have obtained, a teaching certificate in the State of Texas.
TESOL endorsements may be added to an elementary, secondary or all-level certificate at either the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate levels.
Students in the modern languages have access to a multimedia language center. The center is comprised of an audio lab and a state-of-the-art computer lab featuring Pentium multimedia computers. The audio and computer labs are utilized by students in Spanish, French and ESL courses. Lab assistance is available at all times for users.
The university recommends that students seeking a major in Spanish or having a teaching field in Spanish at the secondary level take a minimum of six semester hours of Spanish in a recognized university program in a Spanish-speaking country.
To help fulfill this recommendation, HPU has established a summer program in Monterrey, Mexico, with affordable courses that help Spanish majors and minors meet their degree requirements while immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment.
