THE DOUGLAS MACARTHUR ACADEMY OF FREEDOM
Howard Payne University's Multidisciplinary Honors Program in Public Policy

ABOUT THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM:
As the multidisciplinary public policy honors program of Howard Payne University, the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom is designed for academically gifted students who aspire to leadership roles in a variety of careers. The Academy program prepares students to read critically, think analytically, and communicate ideas effectively. Through a broad-based liberal arts education that emphasizes Judeo-Christian values, Western Civilization, Free Enterprise, and political awareness, the Academy explores the meaning and significance of traditional American values and seeks to understand the problems of contemporary society. Students develop critical-thinking skills by analyzing current issues through the multidisciplinary Academy major, which includes courses from the School of Humanities and the School of Business.
The Academy major has been carefully designed to challenge the student intellectually and experientially. Through the expeditious selection of related and elective courses, chosen with the assistance of the student's academic advisors, thorough academic preparation for a specific career field can be acquired. The Academy Bachelor's Thesis serves as the capstone for the academic program by providing a theoretical as well as a practical application and demonstration of the student's mastery of the multidisciplinary aspects of the honors program as students research, prepare, and defend a thesis on a public policy topic selected in consultation with the Academy Director.
The Academy of Freedom has a proven track record of preparing students for ethical leadership. Since its founding in 1962, more than 350 students have graduated from the honors program and have distinguished themselves in their chosen professions. Today, Academy graduates serve in law, politics, business, ministry, government, medicine, education, economics, psychology and social work.
