Academic Programs

Howard Payne University confers the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Associate in Ministry, and Associate in Health Science.

Degrees require completion of a minimum of 128 semester hours, which includes general education, major, minor and elective courses. Requirements vary within each program.

HPU Cheer Squad Hosts Junior Jackets Cheer Camp

Air Force Band of the West Keyboardist Returns to HPU for Recital Hour
Airman 1st Class Dennis Lambert of the United States Air Force returned to his alma mater on February 3, to perform in Howard Payne University’s Department of Music Recital Hour.

ACADEMY OF FREEDOM HONORS PROGRAM
Developing graduates who are innovators and leaders in their fields is the heart of the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom.

ACCOUNTING
Students seeking the Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting are required to take a 30 semester hour business core which consists of courses in accounting, business, finance, marketing and management.

ART
The Department of Art offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in art communication and art education.

ATHLETIC TRAINING
The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at Howard Payne University provides students the opportunity to earn the Bachelor of Science degree in exercise and sport science with an athletic training specialization

BIOLOGY
The Department of Biological Sciences offers a curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees.

BUSINESS
Business Education, Finance, Management, and Marketing

BUSINESS COMPOSITE-Minor
Business Composite is a minor in the School of Business, and may be paired with any major of the student's choosing.

CHEMISTRY
The Department of Chemistry offers a standard chemistry degree and a chemistry with a biochemistry concentration.

CHRISTIAN STUDIES
Bible, Biblical Languages, Bi-vocational Christian Ministry, Bivocational Education Ministry, Cross-Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Practical Theology, Christian Education, Youth Ministry

COMMUNICATION
The Department of Communication offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Included in this department are the disciplines of communication studies, public relations, and telecommunications.

COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS

The Department of Computer Information Systems offers the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with a major in Management Information Systems (MIS) and the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in Computer Information Systems (CIS).

CRIMINAL JUSTICE
The Department of Criminal Justice offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts, and Sciences (BAAS) degrees.

EDUCATION

ENGLISH
The Department of English offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in English. An English major requires 30-36 semester hours.

ENGLISH WRITING-Minor
Students who are not majoring in English but who want potential employers and professional and graduate schools to note their ability to communicate my decide to minor in writing.

FORENSIC SCIENCE
The Department of Physical Science offers a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree and a supporting concentration ("minor") in Forensic Science.  This minor may be a particular complement to degrees in biology, chemistry, and criminal justice.

GENERAL STUDIES
The purpose of the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree is to meet the needs of non-traditional students who desire a baccalaureate degree incorporating prior learning experiences.

JOURNALISM-Minor
Students wishing to minor in Journalism will learn to think critically and communicate effectively through the media.

LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES
The liberal arts and sciences major seeks to build upon the knowledge and skills base of the general education core

MATHEMATICS
The Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees are available through the Department of Mathematics.

MEDIA MINISTRY-Minor
Media Ministry is a composit minor to prepare Christian Studies professionlas and non-Christian Studies students with the tools to serve in today's multi-media churches.

MUSIC
The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degree, with emphasis in instrumental, choral or pedagogy/accompanying; the Bachelor of Music Education degree,and the Bachelor of Arts degree.

PHYSICS-Minor
A minor in physics shall consist of 18-24 semester hours chosen in consultation with the physics faculty. Six advanced required hours may be waved, but is subject to the approval of the sciences department head.

POLITICAL SCIENCE
General major in political science, prelaw, or political consulting and lobbying

PSYCHOLOGY
The Department of Psychology offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees

SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT-Minor
Small Business Management is an interdisciplinary minor which can be paired with any minor of the student's choosing.

SOCIAL WORK
The Department of Social Work offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in social work.

SOCIOLOGY-Minor
Students selecting sociology will be seeking a broad base of knowledge in the subject through pratical training with a global perspective.

SPANISH
The Department of Modern Languages offers a major in Spanish, consisting of 30-36 semester hours

THEATRE

YOUTH MINISTRY
The only one of its kind among Texas Baptist universities, the youth ministry degree at Howard Payne University prepares students for local church and parachurch youth ministries, as well as camping/recreational ministries. The HPU School of Christian Studies offers a full major and minor in Youth Ministry.
