Dr. Art Allen

Professor of Christian Studies


Dr. Allen has earned degrees from Howard Payne University (B.A.), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div.) and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (Th. D.). Dr. Allen also completed a post-doctoral study at Queens College Oxford in collaboration with New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He began teaching at Howard Payne University in 1988. Dr. Allen is a tenured professor in the School of Christian Studies and also served in Baptist churches in Texas and Louisiana for thirty-one years as pastor.

Dr. Allen has received a number of awards, including Outstanding Faculty Member for the 2001 - 2002 academic year at Howard Payne University. His publications include co-authoring the "New Constitution of the Brown Baptist Association" in 2000. Dr. Allen is a licensed and ordained Baptist minister.

Mary Carpenter
Assistant Professor of Cross Cultural Studies
Director of Cross-Cultural Studies

Dr. Carpenter has earned degrees from Howard Payne University (B.A.) and Hardin-Simmons University (M.A.). She began teaching at Howard Payne University in 2005. Dr. Carpenter's honors include a Doctorate of Divinity from Howard Payne Univeristy in 2000, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Logsdon School of Theology at Hardin-Simmons in 1997, and the Nat Tracy Servant Leadership Award in 2001.

Dr. Bill Fowler

Assistant Professor of Christian Studies

Dr. Fowler has earned degrees from Howard Payne University (B.A.), and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div. and Ph. D.). He began teaching at Howard Payne Univeristy in 2007.

His honors include the Outstanding Philosophy Student from Howard Payne Univeristy in 1975, the Outstanding Young Man in Canada in 1976, and the American Bible Societies Award for Outstanding Student in NT Interpretation from the GGBTS in 1982.

Mr. Chuck Gartman



Dr. Gary Gramling
Director of Youth Ministry Graduate Program
Professor of Christian Studies

Dr. Gramling has earned degrees from Howard Payne University (B.A.), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div.), and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (Ph. D.). He began teaching at Howard Payne University in 1990.

Dr. Gramling's most recent honor was the Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2006-2007 school year at Howard Payne.

Dr. Jay Smith
Assistant Professor of Christian Studies

Dr. Smith has earned degrees from Howard Payne University (B.A.) Baylor University (M. Div.), Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia (Th. M.), and Carey Theological College, Vancouver, British Columbia (D. Min.). He began teaching at Howard Payne Univeristy (University) in 2006. He is completing his PhD at Trinity College - Bristol University in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Smith’s honors include the Outstanding Christian Studies Student award from Howard Payne University in 1996, an Outstanding Civilian Employee citation from US Naval Academy in 1993 and the Outstanding Graduate Theology Student Paper Award for the AAR-Pacific Northwest Region in 2002. In 2002, with co-author Stanley J. Grenz, he published the "Pocket Dictionary of Ethics" (InterVarsity Press). Dr. Smith is a regular presenter at the American Academy of Religion.

Dr. Rusty Wheelington
Assistant Professor of Christian Studies

Dr. Wheelington has earned degrees from Dallas Baptist University (B.A.A.S), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.A.R.E.), and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Ed. D.). He began teaching at Howard Payne University in 2006.

Dr. Wheelington also holds an associates degree of Applied Arts in Visual Communications from the Art Institute of Dallas in 1989.
