Departmental Scholarships


THE JUEL RAY YOUNG MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND - This fund assists students who are studying music at HPU. Applicants must meet the following qualifications: (1) pursue a course of study in some area of music; (2) clearly demonstrate musical talent as determined by the Dean of the School of Music and the music faculty; and (3) maintain a grade point average of at least 3.00. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be deemed acceptable for consideration if he or she has been approved for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for the semester in which the scholarship applies.

J. RAY DAVIS VOCAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP - The recipient of this scholarship must be a student studying in the School of Music with an emphasis on vocal performance. The recipient will be chosen by the faculty in the School of Music.

MERLE COMPTON NASH MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship is restricted to students in the School of Music. Recipients are selected by the music faculty. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be deemed acceptable for consideration if he or she has been approved for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for the semester in which the scholarship applied.

JERRY WADE MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND - This scholarship fund assists needy students who are pursuing music ministry training at HPU. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be deemed acceptable for consideration if he or she has been approved for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for the semester in which the scholarship applies.

THE NATHALIE AND WINTON JONES STRING SCHOLARSHIP - This fund provides financial assistance to qualified string instrument students at HPU. All students must be studying a stringed instrument, i.e. violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be deemed acceptable for consideration if he or she has been approved for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for at least 12 hours the semester in which the scholarship applies.

C.C. LOCKWOOD BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship will be used for students majoring in business. Recipients are selected by the faculty in the School of Business Administration. Recipients must be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credit hours) in any semester in which the scholarship is received.

AGNES ARLINE OWEN SPRABERRY SCHOLARSHIP IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION - This fund was established by Dr. Hubert O. Spraberry, a member of the School of Business Administration faculty, in memory of his mother. Scholarships are awarded to students majoring in any discipline in business administration. Recipients are selected by the business faculty.

TRUETT B. SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student in the School of Business Administration. Preference is given to students in business administration or accounting. Recipients are chosen by the business faculty.

THE YATES ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship fund assists students majoring in accounting at HPU. This scholarship will not exceed $1,000 per year. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be deemed acceptable for consideration if he or she has been accepted for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for at least 12 credit hours the semester in which the scholarship applies. Recipients are selected by the faculty of the School of Business Administration.

E.J. and MYRTLE WEATHERBY, AND CHARLES MOORE SCHOLARSHIP - Established for the purpose of assisting needy students at HPU. Recipients are selected by faculty in the School of Music. Applicants must meet the following qualifications: (1) demonstrate a definite financial need; (2) have 30 credit hours or less prior to the granting of the award; (3) pursue a course of study in the area of music; (4) and maintain progress toward a degree.

EDWARD GARRETT MINISTERIAL SCHOLARS FUND - This scholarship was established for the purpose of helping needy and deserving students attend HPU. No application is required. Selection is made by the dean of the School of Christian Studies in consultation with, and after recommendations and review by, the Christian Studies faculty. Recipients must be upper-level students who have accumulated 12 months in the pastorate.

THE MAXINE FLETCHER WEATHERBY SCHOLARSHIP - Applicants must pursue a course of study in the area of political science and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be deemed acceptable for consideration if he or she has been accepted for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for at least 12 credit hours during the semester in which the scholarship applies. Recipients are recommended by the political science faculty.

ANNE BRADLEY SCHOLARSHIP - Recipients must be enrolled in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom multidisciplinary honors program at HPU. Recipients of this scholarship will not at the same time receive funds from the Hatton W. Sumners Scholarship Fund. Recipients are recommended by the Academy of Freedom faculty.

THE JOE N. WEATHERBY, SR. ACADEMY OF FREEDOM SENIOR STUDENT AWARD - This scholarship is awarded to the first semester senior Academy of Freedom major who has the highest grade point average during the semester prior to receiving this award. The recipient of this award for spring semester will be the second semester senior Academy major who has the highest GPA during the semester prior to receiving the award. If two or more, otherwise qualified, students have the same grade point average, the award will be given to the student carrying the most hours during the semester in which the average is calculated. If more than one student qualifies on the basis of GPA and course load during the previous semester, then the award will go to that student with the highest cumulative GPA. The student must be enrolled for at least 15 credit hours the semester in which the scholarship is given. The recipient will be chosen by the Director of the Academy of Freedom Honors Program.

JACK W. STANFORD BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP - This fund helps deserving students who are pursuing a major in biology. Recipients must be Texas residents, maintain a GPA of at least 3.00, and have no grade of less than "B" in any biology course. Any applicant, otherwise qualified, will be considered if he or she has been approved for enrollment at HPU and is enrolled for at least 12 credit hours the semester in which the scholarship applies. Recipients are selected by the biology faculty.

MORRIS F. STUBBS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Recipients of this scholarship must be full-time chemistry majors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. Recipients are selected by the chemistry faculty.

CLYDE ZACHARIAS BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP - Recipients must be junior or senior biology majors who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better. Students will be considered as long as they have been approved for enrollment at HPU and are enrolled for at least 12 hours during the semester in which the scholarship applies. Applicants are reviewed and recommended by the biology faculty.

MARJORIE L. STEWART TEACHERS SCHOLARSHIP - Candidates for this scholarship must be a junior or senior preparing for a teaching career in elementary or secondary education. Recipients must be recommended and selected by the faculty in the School of Education and the Director of Student Financial Aid.
