Dr. Gary Gramling came to Howard Payne University in 1990 from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, California. A native of Fort Worth, Dr. Gramling graduated from Richland High School and attended Howard Payne University in preparation for his call to ministry. Upon graduation from HPU with a major in Greek, he attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned the Master of Divinity degree. Later he earned a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, and his dissertation focused on the metaphorical “I am” sayings of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion (Southwest Region), and the Association of Youth Ministry Educators.
Dr. Gramling’s local church experience includes leadership roles in both Texas and California. Specifically, he has served in youth ministry positions in rural, suburban and urban settings. Currently, he leads parent and youth ministry conferences for local churches, for local Baptist associations and for Texas Baptists. He also enjoys supply preaching for area churches and has served on several occasions as an interim pastor.
Dr. Gramling lives in Brownwood with his wife PJ, who serves as the Director of Admission at HPU. They have two children – Hannah, a 2012 HPU graduate, and John, a current HPU student. Outside the office, Dr. Gramling enjoys traveling with his wife, working in the yard, playing guitar, watching movies with his daughter and riding motorcycles with his son.
