Department of Art

Hello and welcome to the art department of the School of Music and Fine Arts at Howard Payne University!

HPU has had a time-honored tradition of excellence in art education, studio and graphic design instruction. Our classes are medium sized to allow enough personal attention for each student to develop their art forms. We believe in class critiques which help each student compare their art production with fellow classmates. These in-class sessions are invaluable tools to guide students in their quest for the very best artistic expression.

 Dedicated to Your Success

Our past graduates have gone on to careers as art educators, art historians, gallery directors, studio/gallery artists and graphic designers among other fields of study. We are interested in building strong art portfolios for our students as they become successful artists in our competitive global marketplace. Our art department also prepares our students for advanced graduate study leading to the MFA or Master of Fine Arts degree. This degree grants students the terminal degree credentials to teach art in both colleges and universities. Some students have gone on to doctoral programs in art history, art education and fine art. One recent art major graduated Summa Cum Laude, the highest undergraduate award, at our recent graduation ceremony.

A space to explore your personal creativity

Our facility contains ample space for exploring your personal creativity through courses ranging from ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Our annex facilities are fully equipped and well lit with artificial and natural lighting. They contain easels, kilns and all materials that are necessary for full student artistic experimentation and expression. The Doakie Day Art Center houses additional lecture and studio spaces with smart classrooms for the instruction of art appreciation, art history, design, graphic design and photography. This building, dedicated in 2009 by Texas Governor Rick Perry, is a state-of-the-art facility boasting a Mac computer lab, design studio, independent studio spaces for students and a traditional photography wet lab. We also have a wonderful gallery known as the Dorothy and Wendell Mayes Art Gallery hosting several rotating exhibitions including solo and student exhibitions. The art department also works closely with the Brownwood Art Association in creating internship opportunities for interested students in learning the essentials of gallery direction.
