Required Steps for HPU Student Employment

1. Apply online (must have a login ID for Gateway).

2. Interview with campus employer (if selected).

3. After the hiring supervisor has offered you the position, visit the Financial Aid Office in the Packer Administration Building on Fisk and have them complete the top portion of a Howard Payne University Student Employment Authorization Form.

4. Take the HPU Student Employment Authorization form to the hiring supervisor to fill out the bottom portion.

  • They will keep a copy

5. Take a copy of the completed form back to the Financial Aid Office.

6. Return the last copy of the completed and signed Authorization Form to the Office of Human Resources to complete your payroll eligibility paperwork. (You will not be able to receive a paycheck until this is completed.)

You MUST take the following items to HR when you go:

  • Bank information for direct deposit (a deposit slip is great)
  • State issued photo id such as driver’s license
  • Social security card
  • Other forms of ID may be acceptable IF you do not have the above items (contact HR for a list of acceptable forms of ID)

NOTE: Students may not work in more than 1 on-campus position at any given time.

University Services – Audio/Video Assistant: Are you personable, proactive, and exude a high-level of customer service? Then this position may be the right fit for you! The Audio/Video Assistant will provide excellent customer service and work as part of a collaborative team, sometimes with minimal supervision.

Some responsibilities include:

  • Testing and troubleshooting Audio/Visual (AV) equipment in conference rooms and event areas to ensure working order; reporting all AV issues to supervisor.
  • Communicating to supervisor when AV is broken in certain conference rooms or event areas, and track status of repair and providing workarounds for community when AV is broken.
  • Managing portable video conferencing and teleconferencing equipment.
  • Providing event support for AV equipment.
  • Monitoring condition of conference rooms/event spaces, and resetting furniture into default layouts; reporting problems.

Some training will be provided, however, it is preferable that candidates have:

  • Basic computer skills and proven experience with office software and email applications.
  • Basic knowledge of audio/video technology.
  • Demonstrated success in following through and completing routine tasks under minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills enabling you to interact effectively with a wide variety of people in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent customer service and social skills.
  • An ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Position involves lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling furniture and objects that weigh up to 30 pounds.
  • Significant amount of time on feet walking and/or climbing stairs.

Peer Tutors (Math): Tutors provide academic support for students on campus who make an appointment or come to the Library in person during scheduled walk-in hours. Training will be provided so that Tutors are able to assist students one-on-one or in small groups. They are responsible for making appointments, being available during assigned walk-in hours, and supervising the tutoring center while on duty.

  • Prefer students who have successfully completed at least Calculus 1 with an A or B
  • All majors may apply
  • Must be at least a sophomore in good standing
  • Must have a GPS of 3.0 or better in the courses being tutored
  • Two letters of recommendation are required from HPU faculty/staff as part of the hiring process
  • Experience in MyMathLab or Hawkes Learning a plus

Information Technology – Student Assistant: Prefer CIS major but will consider other majors with the required basic PC troubleshooting skills, ability to do some manual labor, and a good work ethic. Be sure to detail your knowledge and skill level in regard to IT when applying for this position. Attach an additional sheet if necessary.

Institutional Advancement – Alumni Relations Student Assistant: This person will provide support to the office of advancement by assisting with alumni and donor relations including event planning and management, outreach and record maintenance.  This position will also assist with social media and e-communications for university constituents.

Pearl Griffin Memorial Latch Key Program: Pearl Griffin Memorial Latch Key Program is a non-denominational after school program for Brownwood Independent School District students from low-income families. Our goal is to provide working families the opportunity for their children to receive quality care. Through love and understanding children discover their own worth and develop values such as respect, honesty, and fairness. This program is available free of charge to families that qualify. With the exception of the administrator all staff are students of Howard Payne working through the Work Study program.
