HPU Alumni Association to Sponsor Virtual 5K

By: Maddie King

The HPU Alumni Association is sponsoring their second annual virtual 5K on Saturday, March 23 at 9 a.m.

HPU alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to participate in this worldwide event by walking or running from anywhere.

“The Alumni Association is sponsoring the Virtual 5K to bring alumni, friends, and the HPU community together for a fun event that also raises money for student-focused events and scholarships,” said Dr. Kalie Lowrie, assistant vice president for alumni relations.

This 5K is unique because HPU alumni and friends can participate from anywhere around the world. Last year, over 100 people participated from four states and 25 cities. The Alumni Association is excited to see how far the event will go this year.

“So far, we have people signed up from 17 cities, including two other countries! We have alumni from Albania and Lebanon who are participating which means it’s a worldwide race this year,” said Lowrie.

Students are invited to participate in this unique opportunity to get their bodies moving, while coming together with other HPU community members.

The student entry fee is only $10, but alumni have been donating money in order to sponsor students to participate, so they may enter for free.

“Students should get involved to be part of a worldwide event that brings our HPU family together,” said Lowrie.

Regan Noel, sophomore business and academy major from Crosby, Texas said, “I chose to participate in the 5K because it just seemed fun, you can walk, run, or do both and some professors and staff here from HPU do it too and others from the community or alumni, it just seemed like a fun experience.”

Last year, many students participated in the 5K by running on campus with faculty, staff and alumni.

Students are invited to participate again this year on campus. To participate on campus, meet with the Alumni Association at the Mabee Center at 8:45 a.m. on March 23.

“Just do it at least once while you are here,” said Noel. “The great thing is that you can do it anywhere though, you do not have to do it on campus, you can go run at the park or if you’re home, there are so many ways to participate.”
