SASW Strives to Create Leaders and Help Others

By: Chandler Britton/

Despite her many titles, “God led her to teach social work.” That’s what Shantel R. Oplotnik, advisor of the Student Association of Social Work, assistant professor of social work, and director of field education said defines her job.

Oplotnik graduated from HPU in 2019 and went on to receive her master’s degree in social work at Angelo State University.

“Social work is currently in high demand and is fast-growing,” Opoltnik said. “The social work field involves servicing people who are vulnerable and oppressed while also addressing current societal conditions. In our social work program, the students benefit from a small and supportive atmosphere with their classmates and faculty.”

Prior to fall of 2023, the social work program had five students. In fall of 2024, the program increased to 18 students.

“The ideal student who wants to be a part of the SASW would be anyone dedicated to helping those in need, empowering others, influencing change and making a difference in the lives of others and their communities,” Oplotnik said. “We currently have students aged 18 to 54 in our program.”

Stephanie Russell is a non-traditional student majoring in social work with a psychology and Spanish minor from San Saba.

“A career in social work lets me use my voice to empower those who may not be able to be heard. I’m not sure where all I will lead since social work opens so many different doors.  I have alway pictured myself in a micro setting as a counselor and today as I learn more, I’m not sure if you will ask me again in two years. Social workers help relieve people’s suffering, fight for social justice, and improve lives and communities,” Russell said.

The SASW is continuously planning events and encourages students to attend even if they have the slightest interest in social work. The SASW is a student-led program giving students the power to take leadership into their own hands as well as going out in the community to assist those in need.
