The Center for Student Success: A Home for Academic Growth

By: Kassidy Johnson/

At Howard Payne University, academic support plays a key role in student success.

“The Center for Student Success is a place that houses most of the academic support practices,” said Dr. Wendy McNeeley, assistant vice president for student success.

McNeeley said many students are hesitant to use the center due to a “ highschool mindset.” In high school, most individuals viewed tutoring as a punishment, leaving students intimidated and unsure of what questions to ask.

However, the Center for Student Success is a necessary function of the university. Many students utilize the center for academic help, tutoring, and academic coaching.

Located on the third floor of the library, the Center for Student Success offers help in general education classes as well as some major-specific courses. Remote tutoring is also available through Tutor.com. For freshmen, the center provides first-year holistic advising.

The center is open to all HPU students. Tutoring is available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the center itself is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Staff members include McNeeley, Dr. Jennifer McNiece academic coach, Celeste Justice academic success coordinator, and Delaney Bennett academic coach.

Students interested in connecting with a tutor or applying to work as one, may contact Dr. McNeeley at wmcneeley@hputx.edu.
