By Mackynlie Conklin | With the fall semester in full swing at Howard Payne, Chad Anders, the new coordinator of intramurals, has been hard at work to help strengthen intramural presence on campus.
Anders, an HPU alum, has stepped into the position and found many new ways to influence positive change. As a former student and intramural athlete, Anders knew the organization needed to connect with students in ways they have not previously. Though past coordinators have done a great job building and sustaining the program, intramurals was still lacking a few things.
“The huge benefit that I had was stepping into a program that was very well established. A few of the changes that I have made is a limit per team of the [number] of athletes [the teams] can have. It makes the teams across the board more competitive and it makes more teams.”
However, HPU intramurals just this month posted that there will no longer be an athlete rule! This means that any athletes of any sports are allowed play with no limit to the number of athletes on the team.
“Another thing I’ve done for intramurals is tabling. The last few school days before registration ends for a sport we will have our referees interacting with the students [in The Mabee Center] to remind them what sports are coming up and that there is still time to sign up for it.”
Anders has seen the impact that these changes have helped not only interest but also participation in the intramural program.
Registration for co-ed volleyball and ping pong are open until Oct. 18 and registration for the upcoming video game tournament will be up soon on the intramural website at http://www.imleagues.com/spa/intramural/647eae969b6847f2af00b77487597b35/home.
