HPU Gains New Director of Student Leadership and Engagement

By Mia Romero | As we enter a new semester at Howard Payne, Kailee Knudsen has taken over the role of the new Director of Student Leadership and Engagement. Knudsen graduated from Southwest Baptist University where she majored in organizational and strategic communication with a minor in graphic design.

When asked to explain what being the Director of Student Leadership and Engagement consists of, Knudsen expanded on her responsibilities.

“I will be contributing to the holistic development of students through coordinating programs and events, supporting student organizations, and facilitating leadership opportunities among other things,” said Knudsen.

Taking over a position as big as this one, most people might be nervous coming into it. However, this was not the case for Knudsen.

“I wasn’t nervous but expectant of the Lord to continue doing incredible things on this campus,” she explained. “I knew this would be a place of challenge, refinement, and growth in my own life as well. I was most nervous about not knowing what the transition back to America after a year overseas would look like, but God made it evidently clear this is where He was calling me next.”

Prior to her new position, Knudsen served internationally for 11 months on the World Race. She had the opportunity to partner with local churches and ministries in seven countries through Central America, Eastern Europe, and Southern Africa.

“Every day I got to engage with people around the world, creating relationships and sharing Jesus. Being on the mission field in the midst of covid was challenging at times. Ministry constantly looked different, but the need for people to hear the Gospel never changed,” Knudsen explained.

After months of traveling, Knudsen was glad to get the opportunity to work at HPU. She knew accepting the position was the next chapter in her life. After a few weeks of settling in, it has only confirmed her beliefs that this is where she was meant to be.

“Everyone has been incredibly friendly and welcoming. I have quickly felt like I belong in the few weeks I’ve been here. HPU is making a kingdom impact on its campus and in this community and I’m grateful to be a part of it,” states Knudsen.

Monica Garza, a junior education major, met Knudsen last week and had only positive things to say about their meeting.

“Kailee is very personable and seems like she really cares about the students and the student experience, and making it the best it can be,” said Garza.

Garza continued to compliment Knudsen on how well she has been doing in her new position.

“It’s a little bit intimidating because she is moving into a big position, but she has been doing really well so far and it’s been great to work with her,” Garza stated.

Knudsen is eager for the rest of the school semester and the future. “My hope for the semester and future is to see students discover and walk in their true identity and grow not only academically, but in all facets of life.”

Knudsen encourages anyone that has questions, or who just wants to talk to visit her office in the Mabee University Center in Suite 207.

“I hope to build authentic relationships with students and of course, have some fun as we learn and grow together,” said Knudsen.
