Howard Payne University got off to a hot start Tuesday, February 24, in a midweek matchup against McMurry, as the bats came alive early, plating nine runs before recording an out.
The offense slowed slightly in the following innings, but in the sixth, the Jackets exploded for six more runs, making a strong statement against a preseason-ranked opponent.
Pitching was somewhat inconsistent, with the Jackets using six different arms throughout the game, but they ultimately secured a 19-11 victory in a dominant offensive performance. Four Jackets collected three hits apiece, highlighting a big night at the plate.
On Friday, February 27, the Jackets opened their series against Southwestern, and the bats stayed hot. Junior sports management major Luke Watkins, out of League City, turned in a strong outing on the mound, throwing five innings of one-run baseball while striking out 11.
The offense gave him plenty of support, scoring four runs in the first inning, two in the second and six more in the fourth. It was more than enough to take Game 1, as the Jackets rolled to a 17-11 win behind a 22-hit performance.
The Jackets dropped Game 2, but Game 3 told a different story. They fell behind 4-0 early but answered with seven runs in the third to take a three-run lead. After adding three more in the fourth, the Jackets never gave it back.
The pitching staff battled through some shaky moments, but the Jackets held on late to secure a 13-12 win and take the series.
The Jackets’ success was highlighted by strong pitching from Watkins and an impressive week at the plate from senior second baseman and allied health science major John Graza of San Antonio. Graza went 12-for-19 on the week with seven RBIs, leading the offense.
Both athletes were recognized for their performances, earning American Southwest Conference Player of the Week honors.
“I was pretty happy with my performance, and I’m just happy to help the team win,” Graza said. “The momentum we have after this series win is huge for us. This season has already had some bumps and bruises, but the thing I love about this team is we are relentless.”
Reflecting on the series and looking ahead, head coach Stephen Lynn remains focused on continued growth and consistency.
“We are really happy our conference has recognized John and Luke for their performances last week,” Lynn said. “I feel like we are beginning to turn a corner and play more complete baseball. One thing we need to continue to improve on is our relief pitching. Overall, we are progressing well, and we have a large group of individuals playing at a high level.”
