Student orgs put their best foot forward creating Floats

By Jordan Favors | For years, traditions have kept communities of people bonded together. At Howard Payne University, the Homecoming parade has allowed students in different organizations to create memories that last a lifetime.

HPU’s “Stinger Spectacular” Homecoming was an important event on campus. As organizations were prepared to present their floats at the parade on Saturday, October 2nd at 1 pm., members reflected on all of the time and hard work being put into each float’s creation.

Delaney Castor, a Chi Alpha Omega member, described the week of float building as “a week-long sisters bonding event.”

“It’s so much fun to decorate our float together while listening to music and having dance battles. I’m, personally, having so much fun seeing our vision come to life,” stated Castor.

Lunday Maninger, a theatre student, worked just as hard on the Theatre production as she did on the float.

“We collectively chose our theme to be Cinderella since that is our homecoming show,” said Maninger.

The creativity behind each organization’s vision deserves praise. Each year, students put their own twist on the overarching Homecoming theme, and this year’s “Stinger Spectacular” produced many different ideas.

Bethany McClure, Pi Theta Chi member, said that Pi followed their first instincts after this year’s theme was revealed.

“When exec heard ‘Stinger Spectacular,’ the first thing that popped in their heads was ‘4th of July,’ so we put a twist of HPU to the red, white, and blue,” stated McClure.

Overall, the creativity level seems to increase with time. HPU’s organizations are always looking for ways to stay trendy and outdo their past floats.

Amanda Moore, Delta Chi Rho member, said that Rho’s float this year is definitely a step up from the past.

“It is much bigger than what we’ve had in the past and incorporates a fun, underlying message. The idea of “Ancient Greeks” was thrown out, because we are the oldest Greek organization on campus, and everyone was completely on board with it,” said Moore.

In recent years, different organizations have claimed the award for “Best Float.” In 2018, Chi Alpha Omega won with the theme of “soul train.” In 2019, Delta Chi Rho won with “Rho-bots” to signify how long they hope their organization is around during the year of “Yesterday, Today, and Forever” as the Homecoming theme.

Each organization will have a lifetime of memories with some of its best friends. Late nights and lots of laughter characterize Homecoming week for these students.

Chi Alpha Omega captured the number one spot, while Delta Chi Rho placed second and Pi Theta Chi placed third.
