Traditional Spring Sing Makes A Comeback

By Jordan Favors | After three years, Sprng Sing, a beloved tradition at Howard Payne University, is back. This year’s theme is “One Hit Wonders” which is sure to entertain the student body, faculty, staff, and community members.

In the spring of 2020, Covid-19 prevented Spring Sing from taking place that semester and the following, so many of the current student organization members have never experienced the show.

Kate Van Wyk, a senior and Chi Alpha Omega Vice President, stated that Spring Sing is a great way to incorporate all students on campus and preserve tradition at HPU.

“I’m very excited to see how close our organization can become with each other and to see the student body involved with Greek life again. It’s been an uphill battle to get Greek organizations back on their feet after COVID-19,” said Van Wyk.

Despite how demanding Spring Sing preparation can be with most organizations putting in approximately twelve hours a week, it is one of the most memorable events of the year.

Cynthia Montalvo, a junior and Delta Chi Rho Historian, participated in the preparation process in 2020 by preparing backdrop boards and various other props.

“Doing props was fun when we weren’t stressing about how much time we had left, but I can definitely say that I was able to get closer with my sisters and build friendships. There were so many late nights filled with laughter and silly dancing because we were so delusional from lack of sleep,” said Montalvo.

The last organization to win the competition was Delta Chi Rho in 2019. Chi Alpha Omega earned a second place spot and Pi Theta Chi placed third.

This year, organizations are allowed to partner with each other and with others outside of HPU’s campus. Pi and local fraternity Delta Epsilon Omega are working together, while Rho and local fraternity Iota Chi Alpha are putting on one a show together. Chi Alpha will be performing solo.

Montalvo stated that Rho’s theme this year was a group effort and a combination of each member’s creativity.

“As we decided what we would do for our show, we fed off of each other’s creativity until we came up with something that would be both funny and exciting to perform,” said Montalvo.

Spring Sing will be held Saturday, April 23. All students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend and experience the hardwork and dedication of numerous HPU student organizations.
