From Mexico to Brownwood: Jose Lopez Finds Home at Howard Payne

By: Kahliq Paulette

When Jose Lopez first dreamed of coming to the United States, he wanted opportunity and a place that would feel like home.

He found that place at Howard Payne University. Lopez, a wide receiver on the Howard Payne University football team, grew up in Mexico with a love for sports and a determination to make something of himself through education. He said he hopes one day to share his passion for the game with the next generation as a coach.

“Football has taught me so much about teamwork, discipline and faith,” Lopez said. “I want to give that back to others, especially kids who might not have the same opportunities.”

Lopez said his journey began with a feeling. “The community was so tight, like a family. That’s what drew me here. I’ve always wanted to come to America, and HPU gave me a chance to do that and play the game I love.”

Although Lopez travels home to Mexico every chance he gets, he said he has grown to love his time in Texas. From long days on the practice field to quiet evenings studying with teammates, he has found a second family in Brownwood.

Offensive coordinator James Douglas III said Lopez’s work in the classroom and character set him apart. “Jose is one of those players every coach hopes to have,” Douglas said. “He’s coachable, and he’s always encouraging his teammates. He plays with heart, and that’s something you can’t teach.”

As he looks ahead, Lopez said he is focused on finishing his degree and preparing for a career in education and coaching. His story — from Mexico to the gridiron in Texas — is one of determination and gratitude.

“I’m thankful for everything,” he said with a smile. “For my family back home, for my team here and for the chance to live out my dream.”
For Jose Lopez, every challenge is another step toward that dream — one built on faith, family and football.
