About the Division of Engineering

What is Engineering?

Engineering is the application of scientific, mathematical, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, design, build, maintain, research and improve structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes.

Engineering at Howard Payne University

Howard Payne University offers three programs in Engineering leading to B.S. degrees in Engineering Science, Software Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Upon graduation, students can join the industry, register as Engineers-in-Training with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS), become patent agents (Engineering Science graduates only), or decide to pursue graduate studies in a specific area of Engineering. Students who plan to pursue graduate studies in a specific area of Engineering can prepare sufficiently for this goal through any of the three Engineering degree programs at HPU, wherein they will receive the necessary training in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, engineering research and development, engineering entrepreneurship, technical writing, economics, and engineering design.

Moreover, students interested in pursuing graduate studies in Engineering are provided with broad opportunities to engage in comprehensive research and development engineering projects at a very early stage in any of the three Engineering programs at HPU. These projects usually result in broad dissemination of the results in media, international conferences, or journals.

Students should consult the catalogs of universities that they may wish to apply for graduate studies to determine the specific requirements needed for admission. Graduates from the Engineering Science program can also consider taking the exam to become registered patent agents. Graduates from all three programs can take the necessary exams offered by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS), or by similar licensing boards in other states to register as Engineers-In-Training and eventually become licensed Professional Engineers.

The Division of Engineering is currently in the process of seeking  full accreditation status by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the three ABET-compliant programs in Engineering Science, Software Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering, beginning with the Engineering Science Program.

Engineering Education with a Christian Worldview

The university’s distinct Christian worldview and commitment to the service of God and humanity are evident throughout all of the programs within the Division of Engineering.

The School of Science and Mathematics offers more than 10 majors. Learn about the majors and degree plans that best fit your interests.

The faculty of the School of Science and Mathematics are dedicated to helping students prepare for successful careers in STEM. Meet the men and women who will have a key role in your education.

Students applying for admission to the Division of Engineering may also choose to apply for admission to the Guy D. Newman Honors Academy. Providing an innovative approach to the academic program, the Academy enables students to combine their specialized major with coursework grounded in an understanding of the American free enterprise system.

There are a number of scholarships, grants and loans available through the university’s Office of Financial Aid.

Additionally, scholarships are available for HPU students who are already enrolled in their major.
