BACHELOR OF MUSIC, BACHELOR OF ARTS, AND THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
The Bachelor of Music (BM) degree is a professional degree that prepares and qualifies students for professional careers in music education. The BM degree is generally prerequisite to graduate study in music and gives students a thorough, general background in music, in addition to concentrated study in a specific area of music, the declared major. Because of the nature of the curriculum and the music requirements, there is no minor within the BM degree. The academic degree plan for BM degree is outlined in the Howard Payne University Catalog.
Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music Education
The BM in Music Education degree is offered with majors in All-Level Instrumental Music or All-Level Choral Music. This degree permits graduates to teach instrumental or choral music in Texas public schools for grades early childhood (pre-K) through twelve upon successful completion of the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) certification examination. Courses are updated as necessary to meet Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requirements.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS)
The BA degree and the BS degree provides students with a general background in the field of music within the traditional liberal arts curriculum. Students should be aware that with the BA degree or the BS degree some leveling work may be required before admission to some graduate programs in music. Either degree may be paired with a minor (e.g., Business, Christian Studies, etc.) to provide students with studies within another discipline.
MINOR IN MUSICÂ Â
Students majoring in other disciplines may pursue music as an additional field of study by earning a minor in music.
