David Lowrie serves as Dean of the School of Christian Studies at Howard Payne University. He has taught as an adjunct faculty member at HPU since 2009 and began serving as a full-time faculty member in 2025. With a passion for Christian education, ministry, and leadership, Lowrie views teaching not simply as a profession but as a calling and an opportunity to participate in God’s work in the lives of students.
Lowrie teaches courses in both undergraduate and graduate Christian studies, including Old Testament, New Testament, Supervised Ministry, Introduction to the Ministry, Communicative Preaching, Expository Preaching, and Christian Marriage. He particularly enjoys helping students encounter Scripture and consider how biblical truth shapes their lives, ministries, relationships, and sense of calling.
One of the things Lowrie values most about teaching at Howard Payne is the strong learning community within the School of Christian Studies. He describes the school as a place where faculty and students grow and mature together, working as a team toward a shared vision. He is especially inspired by the school’s vision of preparing students to “go” and change the world. For Lowrie, being part of that process is what makes teaching at Howard Payne more than a job—it is an opportunity to participate in what God is doing through the lives of students around the world.
Lowrie’s passion for Christian studies is rooted in his belief that teaching is what God has called and created him to do. He finds joy in helping students discover who God created them to be and equipping them to pursue that calling. He believes the Word of God is powerful and transformative, and he seeks to create classroom experiences in which students not only learn biblical truth but encounter it in ways that shape their hearts and minds. For Lowrie, the ultimate goal of teaching extends beyond what students know on a page to how truth is written into their lives and expressed through their actions.
Lowrie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Baylor University, a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Bethel University and Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a focus in Organizational Systems. His doctoral thesis, “How to Maintain Corporate Unity in Multi-Congregational Churches,” explored leadership and organizational unity within church settings.
Lowrie and his wife attend First Baptist Church of Blanket and North Fort Worth Baptist Church when he is not serving as a supply preacher throughout Texas.
Outside the classroom, Lowrie is an avid long-distance runner. He has completed 10K races, half marathons, and marathons in locations including Paris, France; San Diego; Phoenix; Huntington Beach, California; Fort Worth; and Irving.
The Lowrie family has deep roots at Howard Payne University. His wife also teaches at HPU, and their daughter Lorin Scott serves as an online adjunct professor of history, while Instructor Jordan Villanueva serves as a Christian Studies professor. His daughters, Kalie and Lorin, are both graduates of the Guy D. Newman Honors Academy. Lowrie also served for 19 years on the Howard Payne University Board of Trustees, including two years as chairman. His longstanding connection to the university reflects his deep commitment to HPU’s mission and its continued investment in students and Christian leaders.
