Dr. Lisa Mire

Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Lisa Mire serves as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in Howard Payne University’s School of Science & Mathematics, where she teaches in the Department of Natural Sciences. With approximately 30 years of teaching experience, Mire brings a strong background in chemistry, education, and student mentorship to HPU. This is her first semester at Howard Payne, and she is especially excited about the opportunity to build relationships with students in a Christ-centered academic environment.

Mire currently teaches General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. She enjoys both courses, but Organic Chemistry is particularly rewarding because it allows students to move deeper into the study of chemistry and explore more complex reactions, structures, and relationships. She appreciates the opportunity to help students develop a stronger understanding of the subject while also encouraging them to approach challenging material with curiosity and persistence.

One of the aspects Mire values most about teaching at HPU is getting to know her students. She appreciates the personal connections that can develop in the classroom and sees those relationships as an important part of effective teaching. For her, education is not only about presenting scientific concepts but also about helping students grow in confidence and develop the skills they need to succeed academically.

Mire also values Howard Payne’s God-centered focus. She appreciates the love, encouragement, and positivity that she sees growing out of the university’s Christian environment. That atmosphere allows her to connect her scientific work with her faith and to approach teaching as something meaningful beyond academic instruction alone.

Her passion for chemistry is closely connected to her sense of wonder about God’s creation. Mire believes that studying chemistry provides a small glimpse into the complexity and majesty of God. The structures, reactions, and patterns found in chemistry remind her of how much there is still to understand about the world. She enjoys sharing that sense of wonder with students and helping them recognize that science can deepen appreciation for the complexity of creation.

Mire holds a Bachelor of Science in Curriculum and Instruction and a Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry. Her academic background combines experience in both education and advanced scientific study, giving her a strong foundation for helping students understand difficult concepts while also considering how they learn best.

She has also contributed to professional and scholarly work through publications and presentations. Although specific titles were not provided, her background reflects continued engagement with chemistry beyond the classroom.

Outside of HPU, Mire enjoys gardening, shopping for antiques, and spending time with her family. She recently moved back to her hometown of Brownwood and is currently looking for a local church home.

Mire’s office is located in Winebrenner 205. Through teaching, mentorship, faith, and a lifelong appreciation for chemistry, she seeks to help students develop both scientific understanding and a deeper sense of wonder about the world around them.
