Rusty Wheelington serves as a Christian Studies Professor in Howard Payne University’s School of Christian Studies. With 35 years of ministry experience and more than 20 years at HPU, Wheelington brings decades of practical ministry leadership, teaching experience, and a strong commitment to Christian education into the classroom.
Wheelington teaches courses in Ministry Leadership, Principles of Teaching, Cross-Cultural Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Christian Education. When asked to identify a favorite course, he has a simple answer: all of them. His enthusiasm for each subject reflects his passion for helping students understand how their faith can shape the way they lead, teach, serve, and interact with others.
One of the things Wheelington values most about teaching at Howard Payne is seeing students begin to believe what God says about them and recognize the purpose He has for their lives. For him, education in Christian Studies is about more than academic knowledge. It is also about encouraging students to understand their calling, grow in confidence, and prepare to serve others faithfully.
Wheelington describes his work at HPU as an opportunity to live life with Christ while continuing to learn alongside students and colleagues. Rather than viewing himself only as an instructor, he sees the educational process as a shared journey. He values being part of a community where both faculty and students can continue growing spiritually, intellectually, and personally.
His passion for Christian Studies is rooted in the opportunity to talk openly about Jesus and the role of faith in everyday life. Whether discussing leadership, teaching, youth ministry, or cross-cultural ministry, Wheelington seeks to help students understand how Christian principles can be applied in practical and meaningful ways. His goal is to prepare students not only for ministry positions but also for lives characterized by service, purpose, and a commitment to Christ.
Wheelington holds a Doctorate in Ministry Leadership and Christian Education, a Master’s degree in Christian Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Pastoral Ministry. He also holds an associate degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. His educational background combines ministry, leadership, teaching, and creativity, giving him a broad perspective that influences his approach to Christian education.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Wheelington is an author and presenter. He published the book Following Your Call to Ministry and has contributed chapters to other books focused on Christian education. He has also given multiple presentations in areas including Youth and Family Ministry, Cross-Cultural Ministry, and the Teaching Ministry of the Church.
Outside of HPU, Wheelington enjoys spending time with his family, reading, drawing, riding, running, and participating in outdoor activities. He is involved with Southside Baptist Church.
Wheelington’s office is located in FLC 219. Through his teaching, ministry experience, scholarship, and commitment to Christian discipleship, he seeks to help students discover their calling, develop as leaders, and prepare for lives of meaningful service.
