Jonathan Young serves as Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems in the School of Science & Mathematics at Howard Payne University. With a passion for technology, teaching, and student development, Young is committed to preparing students to become knowledgeable and capable technology professionals who use their skills to serve others and fulfill their individual callings.
Young is in his seventh year of teaching at the high school and college levels and is beginning his first year as a full-time faculty member at Howard Payne. His courses focus on information systems and computer infrastructure, providing students with both foundational knowledge and practical skills relevant to the technology industry. Among the courses he teaches, Networking is a particular favorite because of its hands-on approach. Young enjoys giving students opportunities to apply concepts in practical settings and gain experience that can prepare them for future academic and professional endeavors.
Teaching at Howard Payne provides Young with an opportunity to invest in students not only academically but also personally and spiritually. He describes one of the most rewarding aspects of his work as the opportunity to “partner with God in the growth of people.” As students develop their technical knowledge and abilities, Young values the opportunity to encourage their growth as individuals and to see them become the men and women God desires them to be.
Young’s connection to Howard Payne extends beyond his role as a faculty member. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard Payne and was drawn to the university because of its heritage of faithful service and obedience. Growing up, Young was surrounded by Howard Payne alumni in his hometown who modeled their faith through their everyday lives. Their example helped shape his appreciation for HPU and its mission, and he is now honored to contribute to that heritage by serving as a member of the university faculty.
Young continued his education by earning a Master of Science in Information Technology Management from Western Governors University. His academic preparation, combined with his teaching experience, allows him to bring practical insight and a strong commitment to student learning into the classroom.
Young’s passion for Computer Information Systems is rooted in what he describes as the convergence of three important interests: his love for Jesus, his love for people, and his interest in technology. He views technology education as an opportunity to equip students with valuable skills that can be used to benefit others. His goal is to prepare students not simply for careers in technology, but to become professionals who understand how their knowledge and abilities can be placed in service to others.
Outside the classroom, Young enjoys spending time with his family, particularly watching movies together. He also enjoys hands-on hobbies, including working on old cars, exploring 3D printing, and raising chickens. These interests reflect his curiosity and enjoyment of learning, creating, and solving practical problems.
Young is a member of First Baptist Church in Brownwood. He is based in Winebrenner 102 and welcomes opportunities to connect with students as they pursue their education and prepare for their future careers.
