Sarah Langford serves as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in Howard Payne University’s School of Science & Mathematics. With 11 years of teaching experience, she brings a strong academic background, a love of mathematics, and a deep commitment to helping students grow both intellectually and personally.
Langford teaches a wide range of mathematics courses, including the calculus sequence, statistics, numerical analysis, matrix and linear algebra, college algebra, and occasional analysis courses. Among these, differential equations is one of her favorite subjects to teach. She enjoys helping students move beyond simply memorizing formulas and instead develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, patterns, and problem-solving strategies.
One of Langford’s favorite aspects of teaching at HPU is the opportunity to work closely with students outside of the classroom. She especially enjoys when students visit her office for help and appreciates being able to witness the moment when a difficult concept finally begins to make sense. Seeing the satisfaction students experience when they master something they have struggled with is one of the most rewarding parts of her work as an educator.
Her passion for mathematics is also closely connected to her Christian faith. Langford views mathematics as a language that helps explain much of God’s creation, from the smallest movements of matter to the trajectories of planets. For her, studying mathematics provides an opportunity to better understand the order, structure, and complexity found throughout creation. She also believes mathematics develops important skills such as logic, independent thinking, perseverance, and problem solving—qualities that can benefit students far beyond the mathematics classroom.
Langford holds Bachelor of Science degrees in both Chemistry and Mathematics, as well as a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics. Her diverse academic background allows her to connect mathematical ideas with scientific and practical applications, giving students opportunities to see how mathematics influences many areas of study and everyday life.
Another part of HPU that Langford values deeply is the community of faculty and staff. She considers her colleagues among the best parts of working at the university and appreciates the supportive relationships she has developed with the people around her. HPU also holds special personal significance for her family. Her husband proposed to her at Old Main Tower, and today they both have the opportunity to work at Howard Payne University.
Outside of the classroom, Langford enjoys reading, particularly fantasy literature, as well as a wide variety of creative activities. Her hobbies include sewing, crocheting, embroidering, baking, calligraphy, and furniture building. She is also involved with First Methodist Church Brownwood.
Langford’s office is located in Winebrenner 114. Through her teaching, mentorship, faith, and commitment to the HPU community, she strives to help students develop confidence in mathematics while encouraging them to become thoughtful, capable, and independent learners.
