Howard Payne Univeristy’s Department of English offers composition and sophomore literature to all students as part of HPU’s General Education requirements.

Students who major or minor in English communicate to future employers that they are excellent writers, skilled readers, creative and critical thinkers. The Department of English offers a variety of upper-level courses for English majors and minors, which train students to read, write and think critically as well as gain an appreciation of arts and cultures. Classes are small, usually 6 to 10 students at the upper level, which encourages discussion and forming relationships with other students.

At Howard Payne University, becoming an English major or minor means joining a community of faculty and students who share a deep love of stories, a commitment to clear and powerful writing, and a passion for persuasive argument. Together, we turn to literature as both a wellspring of wisdom and a thoughtful challenge to the status quo. These habits of mind prepare graduates for meaningful careers while fostering the kind of intellectual and personal growth that transforms college from “just a degree” into a life-shaping experience.

The Bachelor of Arts in English offers a broad foundation in the major works of English, American, and global literature while strengthening skills in writing and research. With only 30 hours required for the major, the program pairs easily with a second field of study. An English or Writing minor requires just 18 hours—nine of which already fulfill university-wide requirements, making either option a natural and valuable addition to nearly any degree plan.

If you love to read, want to write with clarity and power, and find energy in the discussion of significant ideas, we invite you to explore an English major.

Students applying for admission to the School of Business may also choose to apply for admission to the Guy D. Newman Honors Academy. Providing an innovative approach to the academic program, the Academy enables students to combine their specialized major with coursework grounded in an understanding of the American free enterprise system.

Rooted in Howard Payne University’s Christ-centered mission, the Department of English challenges students to approach literature, language, and communication with wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to ethical practice. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge and skills in ways that strengthen communities, illuminate the human experience, and positively impact the lives of others. By combining professional expertise in reading, writing, and critical thinking with Christian values, graduates are prepared to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and make meaningful contributions in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

Contrary to popular belief, becoming an English major does not end one’s hopes of getting a job after graduation. As several recent articles attest, employers want the skills that English majors have. Even so committed a fan of the sciences as the CEO of Logitech, Bracken Darrell, argues that liberal arts majors, and English majors in particular, have the “soft skills” that many of the more technically-oriented employees lack. English majors have an ability to communicate ideas clearly, and to be willing to reflect critically on those ideas, that Darrell finds essential to leadership. Similarly, Bruna Martinuzzi, the leader of the training firm Clarion Enterprises, enumerates several characteristics of English majors that meet key needs in business, ranging from research skills to empathy. Finally, Bobby Tudor, CEO of the Houston energy firm Tudor, Pickering, Holt and Co., identifies himself as “A big advocate of liberal arts education”:

When you’re asked the age-old question: “Gosh, what are you going to do with an English degree?” the answer is, “anything I want.” The value was I learned to read critically. I learned to write well. I learned to think on my feet. I learned to probe and ask questions. I got educated. I think that’s what you’re supposed to do when you go to college. 1

Indeed, it is the adaptability of the English major that makes it such a valuable investment.
