Choate has long history with HPU

By Kyra Chapa | Abram Choate graduated from Howard Payne in 1998 with a degree in exercise and sport science. During his time in college, Choate was an athlete and a member of Zeta Chi. After graduation, he served one year as the head boys basketball coach at Harvest Christian Academy in Pasadena. He later returned to Howard Payne where he worked as an admissions counselor for six years.

Choate was appointed as HPU’s sports information director in the summer of 2005. He was essential in the recruitment of student-athletes due to his connections with admissions as well as the athletic department. In the spring of 2013, he was named the assistant athletic director for sports information and game administration at HPU.

Now the director of athletics for athletic communications, Choate oversees all HPU sports information. This includes game statistics, media releases and promotion of HPU athletics and HPU student athletes. Under his supervision, @HPUsports social media presence has increased moving up over 100 spots on the D3 Social Media Index to a top 25 ranking.

When it comes to game administration, he coordinates the setup of all HPU athletic facilities for athletic events, hiring and training of all game workers for all home contests, and coordinates all special halftime events. Choate is essential in HPU’s marketing and sponsorship program. His knowledge is also crucial in assisting the director of athletics in strategic planning and hiring for the athletic department.

In May of 2017, Choate completed a Master of Education in Sport and Wellness Leadership at Howard Payne University. He is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA).

Abram’s wife Torri is also a 1998 graduate of HPU and they have three children, Asher, Ava and Corban.
