Free Stuff? Count me in! On Campus Resources for All HPU Students

By Ryleigh Watson/

Being in college, times can get tough, and money can get tight. So, when college provides the opportunity to get needs for free, most people won’t pass that up. Howard Payne has two different Jacket resources: The Jacket Closet and Jacket Food and Essentials.

The Office of Student Experience oversees the Jacket Food and Essentials.

“Food insecurity is a growing concern for college students nationwide, and Howard Payne wants to help ensure that current HPU students have basic needs met. This not only includes food, but personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies,” said Kailee Torgeson, director of student leadership and engagement.

When students go to Jacket Food and Essentials, there are items that range from one to three points. With this point system you can take whatever you need for the next two weeks as long as it adds up to 15 points or less.

Not only does Howard Payne have a resource to help with food and basic living supplies, but there is also one for students who need clothes.

The Jacket Closet exists to provide free new or gently used clothing and accessories for all Howard Payne students. Attire is suitable for internships, interviews, employment or other more formal events,” said Torgerson.

Mrs. Melinda Hines and the HPU Women’s Club oversee the Jacket Closet and help with the setup of the event.

Jacket Food and Essentials is open bi-weekly. The Jacket Closet is open twice a semester. Both of these can also be opened upon student request. They are located in the Jennings Hall Pod D, across from health services.

With all the supplies for both of these events held on campus, there are a lot of materials that go into them. Jacket Food and Essentials and the Jacket Closet are entirely donated by the Howard Payne family, friends of the university and community partners.

Again, both Jacket Food and Essentials and the Jacket Closet are free for all HPU students.
