Students returning to campus this school year will see some new faces in the residence halls as four new resident directors joining the university residential life staff
Rene Garza is serving as the resident director for Jennings hall while Vitoria Biazi is serving as the director of Veda Hodge and the on campus apartments, and Deaven Connelly is serving in Taylor Hall. All three directors are Howard Payne University alumni, bringing university experience to the campus residence.
The new resident directors will work closely with students and resident assistants throughout the 2026-2027 school year. Their responsibilities include supporting student safety and development of students while also maintaining a positive living environment throughout their respective halls.
Connelly said he is working to build relationships with students.
“I think one of the best ways to fulfill my job is by being available to students,” Connelly said. “I make an effort to build relationships with students, listen to their concerns and create an environment where students feel comfortable.”
As they begin their new roles, the three alumni are bringing their own experiences as HPU students into their work with today’s students. Their familiarity with the university gives them a personal connection to the community they are now helping lead.
Resident assistant and sophomore Wilson Russell said that it has been a pleasure to work with the new resident directors.
“So far this semester our communication has been incredible and all of them care for their residents as individuals. I am grateful for them and look forward to a great semester,” said Russell.
For Garza, Biazi and Connelly their new roles provide a great opportunity to return to HPU and improve student experience.
