Spiritual Health Care for Students

By Emily Hughitt | HPU’s Godly environment is what shapes the school and the student experience. From bible classes and chapel to staff who want to get to know the students and pray for them, the campus is well loved and well served.

Students on campus have many opportunities to serve and be spiritually fed on campus. These opportunities don’t end on campus. Churches in the community are providing more places for college students to grow in their faith.

Coggin Ave Baptist Church is home to the popular college ministry “Genuine,” where students go on Sunday nights to hear the word, sing worship songs, and hang out.

“Ministering to college students is so important because many are seeking and questioning so much at this stage in their lives,” said Billy Cash, CABC college pastor. “Their faith is shifting from what their parents handed to them, if any, to their own.”

Early First Baptist Church has a college group that meets every Tuesday at 5:30 at college minister, Katlynn Welker’s house. The students hangout, have home cooked meals, sing a couple of worship songs, and have spiritual conversation.

“Students need relationships,” said Katlynn Welker, EFBC Children’s and College Minister. “They need to be shown that they are cared for by people outside of their college peers. We think they can be lost in the weeds when they lose relationships, and that’s where we come in to provide a stable, safe place to come and be.”

First Baptist Church Brownwood offers a college community group on Thursday nights from 7:30 to 8:30.

Heartland Church also has a college and career ministry called “Ekklesia” on Monday nights from 7:30 to 10:30.

What college students need most are deep meaningful relationships with peers and mentors,” said Jordan Villanueva, HPU professor and FBC Blanket Lead Pastor. “They also need deep biblical teaching. These needs are birthed out of a culture that is very shallow in relationships and teaching. They do not need watered-down relationships and teaching.”
