In Howard Payne University’s Department of Art, our faculty will work with you to develop your God-given creativity through a variety of coursework and wide range of media.
Remember that God created creativity – the first verses in the Bible are about creating. Later, in Exodus 35:31-33, we read the first record of a person with artistic talents: “And he [God] has filled him [Bezalel] with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts – to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic craftsmanship” (NIV).
HPU offers an 18-hour minor in Studio Art, comprised of coursework in drawing and composition, painting and composition, mixed media, art history, photography, crafts and ceramics. Students will also have the opportunity to have their artwork featured in exhibitions at HPU’s Dorothy and Wendell Mayes Art Gallery, housed in the university’s Doakie Day Art Center.
Rooted in Howard Payne University’s Christ-centered mission, the Department of Art encourages students to develop their creativity, artistic skills, and individual perspectives while pursuing excellence in their chosen areas of study. The Art Minor provides students with opportunities to explore the visual arts, strengthen their understanding of artistic principles and practices, and develop creative skills that can complement a variety of academic and professional pursuits.
Through engaging coursework, personal mentorship, and a supportive Christian learning environment, faculty members encourage students to grow both creatively and personally. Students are challenged to view their artistic abilities not only as a means of creative expression but also as gifts that can be used to communicate ideas, inspire others, serve their communities, and glorify God.
By combining artistic knowledge, creative problem-solving, and technical skills with Christian values, students completing the Art Minor are prepared to approach their work with confidence, purpose, and integrity. Whether pursuing careers in creative fields or incorporating the arts into another area of study, students are equipped to use their creativity to make meaningful contributions wherever they are called to serve.
