Howard Payne University’s Department of Music prepares students to become well-rounded musicians who are performers, scholars, teachers, creators, entrepreneurs, and advocates. Students develop the knowledge and skills needed to pursue meaningful careers and a fulfilling life in music.
Howard Payne University’s Department of Music prepares students to become complete and well-rounded musicians who are performers, scholars, teachers, creators, entrepreneurs, and advocates. The department combines musical training, academic study, and performance experiences to help students develop both competence and character while preparing for a meaningful life in music.
Students have opportunities to perform as soloists and in a variety of ensembles, including Concert Choir, University Singers, University Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Heritage, and several small ensembles. The department offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, as well as Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Music. Students may also choose Music as a minor. All degree programs share a strong foundation in music theory, history and literature, applied studies, ensembles, and conducting. Howard Payne University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Studying music at Howard Payne University gives students the opportunity to grow as performers, educators, scholars, and creative thinkers. Performance is an important part of every program, allowing students to gain practical experience while building confidence, discipline, collaboration, and musical skill.
HPU’s music programs are designed to prepare students for a wide range of opportunities in music education, performance, graduate study, and other music-related careers. Students learn in an environment that values both individual growth and collaboration, helping them become lifelong learners who can continue developing as musicians beyond graduation.

Faculty members seek to prepare graduates who not only demonstrate excellence in their musical abilities, but who are also ready to serve others, contribute to their communities, and lead with Christian character throughout their personal and professional lives.

Students have a wide variety of opportunities to perform in ensembles and as soloists. The choral and instrumental areas have extensive ensemble offerings, including Concert Choir, University Band (marching band), Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Heritage Worship Band, and stage musical productions, in addition to several small ensembles.
