Natural Sciences

Howard Payne University’s Department of Natural Sciences provides students with a strong academic foundation for understanding the biological, chemical, and physical processes that shape the natural world. With majors in biology, biomedical science, and chemistry, students can prepare for careers in health professions, scientific research, environmental science, education, and other science-related fields, as well as for continued study in graduate or professional programs.

Students experience science both in the classroom and through hands-on laboratory work, with courses including General Biology, General Chemistry, Plant Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Organic Chemistry, Ecology, Genetics, Biochemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology. Small class sizes allow students to work closely with professors, receive individualized advising and mentorship, and build meaningful relationships with classmates while developing the knowledge and practical skills needed for their future.

Studying natural sciences at Howard Payne University gives students the opportunity to investigate the world around them while developing skills in observation, experimentation, scientific reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving. Laboratory experiences complement classroom instruction, allowing students to apply scientific concepts and gain practical experience throughout their education.

HPU’s programs in biology, biomedical science, and chemistry can support a variety of academic and professional paths. Whether preparing for a health profession, graduate school, research, environmental work, science education, or another science-related career, students receive personal guidance from faculty as they identify their interests and work toward their goals. The department encourages students to become thoughtful and capable scientists who are prepared to continue learning throughout their careers.
