HPU’s Department of Psychology promotes the understanding of the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of individuals to increase self-insight and awareness, as well as support others.
Students will gain an appreciation of theoretical and practical aspects of personal and relational functioning in an ever-changing culture. HPU Offers a general psychology degree, or students can follow a specialized emphasis in a family ministry track, enabling a graduate to serve in a church or a parachurch organization; or a counseling/clinical track, enabling a graduate to understand abnirmal behaviors, work with others where interpersonal insight is required, or support lay counseling or mentorships. Each of these curiculum options offer a foundation for graduate studies in the fields of psychology or professional counseling.
Psychology is a multifaceted discipline that seeks to better understand human nature through the scientific study of the internal and external forces that drive behavior.
What is this program's goal and objective?
The purpose of this program is to provide a comprehensive training program for students. In furtherance of that goal, the Psychology Department has chosen academic requirements that would support the needs of students wanting to pursue graduate training in psychology, counseling, and other related fields of study. In addition, the psychology major may function as a solid liberal arts degree for students wishing to pursue graduate or professional training in other fields such as medicine, law, theology, business, and education. The psychology degree may be chosen by students who plan to enter the job market following the completion of their bachelor’s degree.
This degree plan will provide students with opportunities to: explore the foundational content domains of psychology, develop their skills in conducting and evaluating psychological research and learn how to evaluate the important theories and presuppositions in psychology from a Christian worldview
Rooted in Howard Payne University’s Christ-centered mission, the Department of Psychology challenges students to approach the study of human behavior with wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to ethical practice. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge and skills in ways that positively impact individuals, families, professions, and communities. By integrating psychological insight with Christian values, graduates are prepared to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and make meaningful contributions to the well-being of others.
