HPU Attendance Policy

Missing a few classes may not seem like a major issue, but at Howard Payne University, too many absences can affect a student’s ability to receive class credit.

HPU requires students to attend 75% of classes throughout the semester to receive credit. There are no free absences and absences count from the first day classes begin. Both excused and unexcused absences count towards the attendance total.

If a student falls below the 75% requirement, they may receive a failing grade for the course. Certain professors even have a stricter attendance policy included in their course syllabus.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Sarah Langford said students should view attendance as more than simply meeting a requirement. Langford, who is currently serving as president of the faculty assembly, equivocates class attendance to an investment.

“Students are paying to go to class,” Langford said. “When you miss class you are missing out on the full return on the investment you have already made.”

Some absences can be excused including university approved events, illness and emergencies. Students participating in official university events must have the absences approved though appropriate university processes. Instructors may also allow students facing extenuating circumstances to make up missed work.

For student athletes, keeping up with both school and athletics can make attendance more difficult. Langford said students should plan ahead when major assignments and athletic commitments overlap.

“Know what you can commit to and don’t be afraid to readjust throughout the semester if you overestimated your abilities,” Langford said.

HPU’s attendance policy places the responsibility on students to know their requirements, communicate when conflicts arise and make the most of the time they have in the classroom.
