Things to do in Brownwood When You’re Bored

Small town life may seem like there are few options of entertainment, especially when attending a smaller college. We have compiled a list of things to do in Brownwood when you’re bored.

Explore downtown Brownwood:

Downtown Brownwood is rich with history and unique sights. In addition to the new and old businesses, there are many unique sights and buildings to see and experience.

    • The Echo Star: Stop by Pat Coursey Park and stand in the middle of the large star on the ground and begin speaking. Your voice will bounce off of the wall of the park and echo back to you. It is a unique experience.
    • Intermission Book Shop: Located just across the street from Pat Coursey Park is quaint local book shop. Its architecture is rich with history and creativity. Grab a cup of complimentary coffee or tea and roam through the bookshelves.
    • Saturday Morning Stroll in Downtown Brownwood: Spending the weekend in Brownwood? Stroll down Center Ave. on Saturday morning and stop in and visit all of the local businesses. Even if you’re just window shopping, you are sure to be greeted by business owners with kindness and a smile.
  • Visit a local park: There are several beautiful parks in Brownwood. Open to the public, these parks are a great place to enjoy the beautiful nature of central Texas.
  • Riverside Park: Take a hike or a run on one of the beautiful trails, play a round of disk golf or try your luck at fishing in the river. Don’t forget to bring a loaf of bread to feed the friendly ducks.
  • Coggin Park: Featuring basketball and tennis courts as well as a sand volleyball pit, Coggin park is the perfect place for some outdoor recreation. The park also includes a large open field for organized games with friends.
  • Lake Brownwood State Park: A beautiful location for hiking, swimming or hammocking. The $5 entrance fee gives you access to hours of beautiful scenery and nature.

Try a new local restaurant:

  • Tres Leches Bakery: Featuring authentic Mexican street tacos and baked goods, Tres Leches Bakery is the perfect lunch stop in downtown Brownwood.
  • Runaway Train Café: Experience the thrill of having dinner in an old 1960’s train car at the Runaway Train Café. The friendly staff, delicious food and unique atmosphere make for an amazing experience. Don’t forget to try the famous Texas toothpicks appetizer!
  • Jolene’s Thai Cuisine: Experience authentic Thai dishes at Jolene’s. This local, family owned business is a special Asian food treat in Brownwood.

  • Satisfy your ice-cream craving:
      • The Turtle Gelateria: As you explore downtown, don’t miss out on a stop at The Turtle Gelateria for some home-made gelato. Featuring several different flavors, the gelato is made in-house and is an absolutely delicious treat!
      • The Runaway Train café: There are a few different options for ice cream at the Runaway Train café and the best part is, it’s all Bluebell! Try a slice of their famous pecan ice-cream pie, order a delicious milk shake topped with whip cream and a cherry or simply order a double scoop ice-cream cone.
      • Show-Cones: Tucked off of the highway West Commerce street just across from Commerce square is one of the tastiest shaved ice shacks you will ever experience. Show-cones offers a variety of flavors of shaved ice that is sure to satisfy your cravings.
      • Doc’s Pharmacy: You may be thinking, a pharmacy? But trust us, they serve some of the best Bluebell ice-cream milkshakes in town. The friendly customer service and unique two-in-one ice-cream bar and pharmacy are quite the experience.
      • Jacob’s Pharmacy: Starting to see a trend? Jacob’s pharmacy serves frozen yogurt with all the toppings. While you’re there, be sure to roam through their cute gift shop.
