Howard Payne University’s Department of Kinesiology provides a Christ-centered approach to the field of human movement through study, practice and service.

In addition to providing a general physical activity program for all HPU students, the department offers two majors for students interested in careers in human movement studies. The kinesiology major is divided into four specializations – generalist, sport management, fitness specialist and all-level physical education certification. The allied health sciences degree is designed for students who wish to continue their education in graduate programs for athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, and other allied health occupations.

Outside the Classroom

All kinesiology and allied health science majors are required to take an internship course. Students pursuing teacher certification complete clinical teaching. Other internships range from assistant teaching, to assisting the sports information director in the daily activities of the HPU athletics department, to observing and participating in activities of one of HPU’s physical therapy clinic and hospital partners. Students may take the internship course multiple semesters to get a wide range of experience.

Students desiring Texas Licensure in Athletic Training can complete 1,800 hours of internship in addition to the coursework required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. All required classes are provided within the Allied Health Sciences and Kinesiology coursework.
