BROWNWOOD – April 17, 2026 – Howard Payne University’s (HPU) annual academic summer camp for elementary and middle school age students is scheduled for July 13-17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at HPU.

The registration fee for the program is $165 and includes tuition, a T-shirt, promotional items, daily snacks and supplies. T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who preregister by June 30. The deadline for late registration is Friday, July 3.

The Summer and Young Scholars week-long day camp programs are designed to provide intense, fun and academically stimulating summer camp programming for children entering grades K-6.

“Summer and Young Scholars is a local favorite for children in Brown County and beyond,” said Dr. Julie Welker, chair of the Department of Communication and director of the Summer Scholars programs. “We are excited to offer this year’s camp to anyone who is looking for an enriching experience for their child.”

The theme for this year’s programming is Works and Wonders, based on Psalm 104:24, which reads, “O LORD, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.”

The classes focus on the exploration of ideas and learning through hands-on experiments, open-ended questioning and integrative activities. Each student a commemorative t-shirt. Students in grades 1-3 will experience a rotation of classes in math, science, art and physical education. Students entering grades 4-6 will engage in STEM classes and physical education.

As a part of the 250th year celebration of the United States, students will also take a tour of HPU’s Academy of Freedom.

“We are excited to be able to take students through the newly renovated Academy of Freedom to enhance the learning experience during Summer Scholars,” Dr. Welker said.

“The goal is to challenge school-age children academically, with innovative teaching in a variety of subjects,” said Dr. Welker. “We like to focus on the core subjects in a fun and engaging way, challenging students to dig deeper in each subject area.”

One of the strengths of the Summer and Young Scholars programs is the high quality of the instructors.

“All of our instructors are either professors at HPU or award-winning, experienced educators,” Dr. Welker said. “Each instructor offers hands-on, creative applications of their disciplines in each class.”
