Howard Payne University’s Department of Criminal Justice participates in integrated training with Brownwood Police Department

BROWNWOOD – April 30, 2026 – Howard Payne University criminal justice majors assisted Brownwood Police Department in an integrated training on April 23. The training included the Brown County Sherriff’s office, the Brownwood Fire Department, the Brownwood Police Department and the Early Police Department.

Seven students took part playing various roles during the simulation – Ataleigh Constancio, a senior from Early; Mia Diaz, sophomore from Brownwood; Jaden Elie, a senior from Edgewood; Jenna Harper, sophomore from Brownwood; Lucretia Harvell, a sophomore from Cisco; Chloe Waller, a senior from Frisco; and Kendall Watkins, a senior from Rockwall.

Lisa Medlin, J.D., chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, was grateful for the opportunity for her students to learn outside of the classroom.

“The students can only learn so much in the classroom,” Medlin said. “This training was a wonderful opportunity to learn about protocol for active shooters and how to debrief after each scenario.”

Waller enjoyed the training and appreciated the insights she gained from the officers.

“This training was eye-opening because I saw how officers reacted and took control of the situation in real time,” Waller said. “While I was having fun at the training, it was enlightening to see officers take control, figure out what they did right or wrong, and how they improved their reactions in the next scenario.”

Applications for admission to HPU for the fall 2026 semester are being accepted. Those interested in applying can contact the Office of Admissions at 325-649-8020 or enroll@hputx.edu or visit www.hputx.edu/apply.
